perfect in my eyes.
If I had had any idea, that such result is possible, I had kept all xRay films of our hospital some years ago.
too late
grrr...
Thanks Hendrik, I don't think it's perfect, but it came out well enough. In particular agitation through constant flipping of the sheet worked well. Since the film barely touches the tray (I flip it before it sinks), there were no scratches at all and development seemed very even. In hindsight, I should have exposed at 50 or so since much of the color in these flowers is quite red and that doesn't register on this film.

Orchids...my favorite.
Not sure if I'm impressed of the photo or that you grew this yourself. One of my aunts grows them in the Philippines, in her front yard, to sell to stores. She has them tied up on branches on a tree.
This is a nice one!

Thank you very much!
I am envious of people who can grow Orchids outdoors in the Phillippines.... I have only a 12 X 16 foot box I can grow them in, and it must be heated through the winter. The expense!!

Overhead DIY softbox, a foamcore reflector in front of the flower. I might have had another light pointed at the face of the flower, I'm not exactly sure as it was a few weeks ago.

I don't remember exactly, I know I had the bellows extended nearly all the way. It's a fairly large flower; the head is about the size of my palm.
That may or may not answer your question. I'm not terribly well educated in LF terminology.

Do carnivorous pitcher plants count?
From the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Local photo club had a field trip. Lots of photographers with small format cameras and no tripods. Personal Challenge: Take the 4x5 and get at least one nice image. Got a few - this one was with a 210mm focused from my tip toes as it pointed down into a stand of Sarracenccia (?) plants. I liked the shapes and repeating forms. Tri-X 320P or was that Acros 100?

Thanks, Chassis. High praise, indeed, coming from you. You've got great stuff on here (and elsewhere). This was an early attempt at using a larger aperture to push the subject away from the background, and I'm glad it works.
Nice stuff Brandon - I've been busy lately and forgot to keep up with the group, I would've loved to go! Need to get back into things and "join" officially. Was this the Atlanta club or SE?
Brandon,
Sorry. Negative reviews often are not appreciated. But . . .
The lighting is flat, there is just very little compositionally that is interesting and the image is either overexposed in the camera or in the processing. The red channel is clipped quite a bit leaving no detail at all in the yellow petals. Bright yellow is difficult enough to capture well, and this exposure gives it no chance. Much the same everywhere else.
It's often said that it's almost impossible to overexpose color negative film. Not so.

Thanks, Rich. Yep, yellows can block and this one did. It wouldn't have been in post and shouldn't have been in camera. Could be in the home processing, emulsion, who knows. Still looks better to me than many digital palettes, and I'll take that yellow over a blocked digital red any day, personal preference.
As for the composition, to each their own. I have been doing more with straight on comps recently and this is one of those.
Certainly, there are better images of flowers out there, but this was just one I wanted to share in this particular thread. Personally, I usually stay away from flowers-have done enough of those years ago, lol.

Hey Bryan, the field trip was via Atlanta Photographic society. I find the crowd at APS to be pretty approachable and like to make the field trips I can. I also learned that carrying a 4x5 rig in a hot humid environment = tons of sweat.

Weird, but really cool!
This morning I went with my wide and parents to a sunflower field, a new fall tradition we started last year. It's nice to get out early with the nice cool weather starting to hit. My Linhof has been sitting fallow too long so I popped my 15cm APO Lanthar and shot some handheld stuff just for fun. Here's one shot that worked out well.

Shot with my Deardorff 8X10 with an old magic lantern lens attached: estimating about f8.5 I exposed the Delta 100 at 1 second and 2 seconds (2 sheets). Since I knew this lens was low in contrast and prone to flare, I selected Delta100 for its unique contrast rendering.

Very nice Sir
Yes, nice one Paul.
I selected Delta100 for its unique contrast rendering.
Do you mind explaining this a bit more? I don't shoot a lot of Delta 100 but I do have a bunch of it in 8x10 I am starting to shoot. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't, but I haven't shot a million sheets of it like T-Max 100 to dial it in. I just happened to pick up a large lot of 8x10 Delta 100 at some point so I am going to need to get a bit more acquainted.

Nice soft image that lets the eye wander. But I am currious about the 2 bumps/notches lower left side. Are you notching your holders or did the Film have this. Seems very uniform and there are no apparent notches on the black part of the film to tell you which is emulsion side.
EDIT Hmm, just noticed the top right round corner suggesting cut x-ray film.

Yup, the notches are from a previous owner of the holder. The film is xray, the lens is home made.

The orchid is Laeliocattleya Powhatan, clone #148, bred by Arthur Chadwick Sr. in the 1980s and registered in 1990. In color, it is a white flower with an intense purple and yellow lip (https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4300/35816143950_b91f68715b_h.jpg).
I know this is an older image. Does the photographer recall his/her f-stop? I’m mostly just curious. I have several orchids and struggle with making nice compositions when photographing them.

Given that this was done with my Kodak Ektar lens, I would estimate that the f-stop was between 11 and 16. There's maybe 3" of depth of field in that image, so f16 or less seems about right.

I think you are absolutely right about some sort of lens distortion. I see this on the original slide and also on some other photos I took with a similar setup. Take a look at this photo (https://www.flickr.com/photos/palikalsi/30472118282) that I took on 5x7 with a similar 210mm lens that shows pretty much the same halo effect on the out of focus flowers. I quite like the result actually :)
I do think my BW conversion has emphasized this effect more because I adjusted individual color channels manually. Below is the unadjusted color version of this 2nd image.

Strange thing is that I can't recall if this one was shot with my 270mm Goerz Dagor or with the 180mm Fujinon W as I tried both on the same shot.
Anyway both were shot wide open and my guess goes for the Goerz...

Yesterday I received my Intrepid 4X5 Camera - part of the prize package I won for one of my tintypes recently (See: https://moderncollodion.com/2018-competition-results/ Thank you very much Modern Collodion/Intrepid Camera Co/UV Photographics!)
This is the first glass collodion negative I made with the Intrepid, fitted with a 1930s Kodak 5.5" Anastigmat lens (from Blue Moon Camera in PDX). While its not a great negative, it does show some nice texture and demonstrates just how sharp and capable the Anastigmat is!
Coffer's #7 negative collodion used, in conjunction with John's developer for negatives - well seasoned with used developer. The negative was intensified using John Coffer's intensification method, which I must say works beautifully. Exposure was 6 minutes at f6.3

Again a great image Paul! What is John Coffer's intensification method? Lately I've tried iodine rdevelopment, bleach with fericyanide/potassium bromide followed by redevelopment with silver nitrate added to the developer and copper sulfate/KBr followed by redevelopment in a weak silver nitrate/HNO3 bath; the latter works best for me and is very fast. With the other methods, I get uneven development, pinholes and incomplete development. The copper sulfate route does build density like crazy though (which is great for salt prints, so I'm not complaining).

The method JC advocates is the Copper sulfate/Potassium bromide bleach + AgNO3 redevelopment technique. It’s fast and simple, and you can control it by carefully timing the bleach bath. It works well for me.

Hi, Paul, and thanks for the compliment!
No, I have to admit I took it to another lab. I wanted to see results in a hurry. Blue Moon processes sheet film larger than 4x5" by hand in trays, and I didn't want to either push the lab's agenda or wait until the lab tech could get to it. These were processed at Citizens Photo. Until the demise of Newspace, I processed all my B&W film myself in Pyrocat-HD. I hope to return to that practice soon. Lack of easy access to a darkroom and time to process have been a problem. (I could go into Newspace early on a Saturday and process work undisturbed!) I hope to get into The Portland Darkroom to avail myself of their JOBO for my large format work.

I purchased a very nice 203mm Kodak Ektar f7.7 from a forum member last week and it arrived this afternoon. I set to work doing some tests with it and this is a wet plate collodion image (from a glass negative) made with the EKtar lens. 80 seconds exposure at f11, John Coffer's #7 negative collodion, developed in the appropriate (well-seasoned) developer. I hope you like it. Those little Ektar lenses are amazingly good (and sharp where it matters)

Hey Fritterer, The image you credited to Miguel was/is Paul Bardens . Miguel "Quoted" the image/text of PaulBarden to complement him. Miguel then accidentally erased the text that gave credit to the author of the image. It kind of makes it look as if it's Miguel's photo.
Let me say, I do NOT in the least think Miguel meant to do this but it happened accidentally.

Thank you Louis! Much appreciated. I was introduced to the Ektar lenses in February 2017 when I bought an 8X10 Deadorff as a full kit, and it had a 12" Ektar on it. Immediately I could tell from the first images that I was going to have a good relationship with the Ektar lens, and I was right. Now I have a 7.5" Wide Field Ektar for the Deardorff, and a very nice 203mm Ektar for the Intrepid. They are gorgeous lenses and as capable as anything more modern.
Glad you are enjoying my new work. Collodion negatives are both an appealing way to work, and I like the results immensely.

Sarracenia hybrid (North American pitcher plant) - 8X10 wet plate collodion negative on glass.
Made with the Deardorff and the 12" Ektar lens (wonderful old piece of glass!). Collodion used: Coffer's "#7 for negatives" and appropriate developer.

A few days later, the Parrot Tulips have opened fully and now display more shape and texture.
This is a wet plate collodion negative (on glass) shot with the Intrepid 4X5 camera fitted with my 203mm Kodak Ektar lens.
Collodion used: Coffer's #7 for negatives, which I suspect has gotten very close to too old to use (dirty negative, streaks and the collodion at the edges didn't sensitize properly). Still, it makes for an interesting result.

Got out to shoot some closeups of flowers on a tree on the first warm day we've had in a long while. (I don't know my trees....but I know it's not a cherry tree!) Efke 100 8x10 from the freezer shot in my Kodak View #2 with a Fujinon-W 300mm lens at full or almost full extension. f 5.6 at an eighth of a second. Souped HC-110 dil.B.

Wow, Paul! Looks so great!
Thank you very much. I made 7 plates that day, trying hard to grab the best possible instance of this shot. Its hard to do with wet plate collodion because there is at least 5 minutes of plate prep before you even get "film" into the camera, and even in good light, exposures for a glass negative can be between two and 8 minutes. You can imagine what this is like when dealing with shifting light conditions (cloud cover increased and decreased the whole time) and the shaft of light across the wall behind went from a sliver to completely out of frame within 30 minutes. It was definitely a case of chasing a moving target.
I'm glad you like it. Its a cliche, of course - but its a cliche I like a lot. :-)

This is a first stumbling attempt at still life, much more challenging to focus and choose what is out of focus than the landscapes I'm used to. All the same it was a fun way to spend an empty hour!

Sean, 5x4 enlargers are not easy to come by.
You know about https://www.secondhanddarkroom.co.uk/index.php/i_classfa_fa-shopping-cart-i_shop_here-s-h_enlargers/?k=27672:3:: ?
They have an LPL (with which I'm happy) and a bomb-proof Durst which costs twice as much.
Coming (sometime) soon- https://intrepidcamera.co.uk/blog/introducing-the-intrepid-enlarger
Always ebay, but you'll have to watch continually as they appear so rarely.
Also, visit FADU. A nice 5x4 darkroom kit was put up for sale there very recently. Might even be worth posting a 'wanted' thread.

Thanks for the pointers Colin!
I have been browsing with intent on second hand darkroom for several weeks, but the cost of a full setup with enlarger, timer, and lenses ends up pushing close to £1000 which is just a little to much for me to spend at the moment...
The intrepid enlarger looks ideal, and I'll definitely be picking one up for taking to work and keeping busy.
I'll also have a look at FADU, haven't been there before.

I was rather taken by the three phases of this lily all nicely arranged on the stem so bearing in mind my sensitivity to the pollen of these blooms I donned a face dust mask and managed to capture the image without disturbing them too much.

Before I started with LF, I never thought flower shots can be so interesting and cool!
Love this one, like many others in this post.

Gorgeous tonality, David. Really lovely.
Thanks for that. This is one from a whole series focused on the same vase of flowers over time.

My first try at a close up. Quite happy that I managed to get the exposure about right calculating for bellows extension and reciprocity. I probably should've stopped down a bit further though as I would've liked more of the flowers at the rear to be in focus.

Howard,
Beautiful composition and wonderful tonality. I haven't visited this forum for about 2 years, haven't picked up my LF gear in 5 years and haven't posted in this thread since 2012. I spent a couple of hours going thru this entire thread last night and reminded myself of how much I used to enjoy shooting flowers in the studio. I really miss it.
Keep up the good work everyone, I'm getting an itchy shutter thumb again.

This is a vase with flowers my wife put on the table. I thought they were beautiful and took two shots with the same focus, camera but different film to check the difference. Do you notice any difference? Click on the images and you will see a full scale shot.
After developing and scanning the photos, I realized they were not natural flowers, but man-made.
