Thanks, Barry. I love those Cinephors, it's true. I think I paid fifteen bucks for this one.

Stone: I've had about ten sheets of Tech Pan loaded in holders for about four years but have been afraid to shoot them. Then I finally thought, "What am I saving them for?" The first sheet was way overdeveloped, but for this exposure two minutes in HC-110 1:49 did the trick.

How about an open thread for all things floral. Here's one of mine. These are Puruvian Lillies I've been told. I like the sequence of young buds blossming into the five adults. The different stages of growth.

I opted for the Astia 100F because I wanted to contain the contrast for Ilfochrome printing.

The funny thing is the higher-key aspect is due in part to the high level of base fog in this old film. I don't think I can get any proper blacks from it, but if I develop it long enough--in this case twenty minutes rotary--I can draw out some decent highlights.

Thanks, Ken. In fairness, your high-key still lifes are always instructive. Sometimes I need to be reminded that an image without blacks or whites can still be effective.

I REALLY like this but since ones eye moves from focused to unfocused I prefer the focused bottom section cropped out.

I agree about the sliver of focus in the foreground being distracting, but each time I cropped it down the image seemed too crowded somehow. Luckily, that decision is not set in stone.

Leave the top. headroom makes it feel younger and less mature, fresher and more innocent. Like a child with more headroom or an adult with less.

Actually, I still prefer this to the former.

In this case I think I'd like to see the dark stuff cropped off the bottom and include the original dark area at the top, to sort of provide a ceiling for the fresh young flower.

But thats just me.

Thanks. Honestly, I know nothing about lighting, not in any formal way. What you see are the results of a lot of experimentation. There have been many failures along the way to these few successes.

As far as selling prints (or even giving them away), I'd be more than happy to, but at the moment I have no way of making them, at least not myself. All the gear I need is sitting in the garage just waiting for.the time and money to make a darkroom happen, but I also lack any kind of printer or the knowledge of how to use one.

Ha, well great. I wonder if the ground glass of LF helps more with the vision of an image than smaller formats? Interesting, that and/or your use of the zone system (I saw you mention it in another thread). Regardless, great stuff. I assume you just had a pitch black environment with bright spot focused lighting. Seems like it wasn't inside a tent or anything. Really cool.

And use this as inspiration! Yeah I would like to figure something out at my house to print at home. If I could rig up a sink in my garage I would probably get my own printing equipment (most of it now days is lingering around dirt cheap). For the time being, I have been printing at the darkroom of a "local" lab, where they rent it. Problem is only open M-F, of which I work. So I have to take a day off to go print. Did that a few times last year, plus had to teach myself about printing.

Best of luck getting printing sorted. Ansel said something to the affect of...that is where the real magic happens (I don't recall the exact quote).

I have a small tungsten spotlight that allows for a very narrow, focused beam. And yes, I used it in a very dark room to ensure deep blacks all around the subject. I hope to make some contact prints of my bigger (5x7 & 8x10) negatives at some point since that won't require an enlarger. I should be able to manage it in my small dark closet where I load and unload my film.

Wow Jonathan this is wonderful. I'm stunned with what you do with old fogged film.

jcoldslabs
1-Apr-2015, 15:29
Thanks, Alan. In my experience it's rare that old film--even really old film--is completely worthless. Once you assess the limitations of each vintage emulsion, there's a lot of fun to be had. Some subjects are better suited to certain films depending on the amount of fog and other flaws. I'm really enjoying the look of this batch of Agfapan in particular. It's a tad bit gritty and low contrast, and most sheets have some minor emulsion damage, but it seems to be working well for my purposes so far.

If I'm ever forced to switch to digital it's the surprise element inherent in shooting old film that I'll miss most.

Even better than the camellias! The luminous whites are just perfect and a nice fullness to the image from the DOF. Perhaps a small flag for that bright spot on the vase/urn/whatever?

Thanks, Bryan. I thought about burning in that left side of the vase a bit more, but blocking the light at the time of exposure would have helped, too.

Mount that Tessar! I have a full complement of Tessars and Xenars from 13.5cm through 30cm and they're all good. Not the best when shooting into the light, but all around lovely lenses.

You guys are too much! But thanks. I'd need prints before I hit up some galleries (oh, and, uh, the self-confidence to approach galleries in the first place), and sadly I couldn't say when that will happen. Soon, I hope, but as the Smiths famously asked, "How soon is now?"

I like the concept on this last one a lot.

What's funny about this shot is I was unhappy with it "straight." It seemed kind of boring and a rehash of what I've already done, but I kept seeing a corner of the white card I use as a fill reflector protruding into the image on the ground glass. In frustration I put the whole card in the frame and then....it worked even better. I wish I could say I pre-visualized this idea, but it just came together out of the blue.

There are many precedents for this idea, though, including the tree photographs of Myoung Ho Lee (http://www.yossimilo.com/artists/myou_ho_lee/).

PS: And as far as text around here, I hope to add photos in the next month or two. I just purchased a tripod yesterday and a new ball head last week. Everything else for my kit is ready, other than me being in town and using it. I am sure my first attempts will be horrid, but who knows. Only thing I need to track down is pull the trigger on one of the Epson v700's on eBay. My "old" Epson v500 was destroyed by my loving cats. I like this a lot, even more than the color version because I see more detail in the flowers. To my eye the B&W has much better tonal separation in the petal, pistil and stamen detail (I had to look that up to express myself clearly).

That's correct Ramiro. RAW scan in VueScan and then conversion through Color perfect Photoshop plug in. The challenge for me was getting VueScan setup correctly and then knowing the right buttons to click in Color perfect in the right order so multiple scans of same film in same light look similar. Atleast for me, Color perfect does very different things if you click the same buttons in different order.

That is great!

Thanks!

I like this a lot, even more than the color version because I see more detail in the flowers. To my eye the B&W has much better tonal separation in the petal, pistil and stamen detail (I had to look that up to express myself clearly).

Did you use a filter? What color and quality light did you use?

No filter; I almost never use them. I recently posted a photo of the (embarrassingly) amateurish set-up I'm using for all these shots. (See post #255 in the Still Life 2015 thread.) It's lit from a window in my living room, sometimes covered with a white sheet. The room itself has red walls, and there is a lot of light spillage from other windows, so I think this is part of why color balancing these images it proving to be difficult.

Jonathan - really loved your last B&W image and then you posted the color which is amazing. I like both of them but prefer the color

Thanks, Pali. I'm not sure which one I prefer. It's so shocking to see color after all these years of shooting black and white that I'm having trouble being objective about it.

Here's another image that I previously posted in black and white. The color balancing on this seems a bit better, maybe because the light was less diffuse and drowned out the other colors bouncing around the room.

Yes if you care to share more details perhaps include them in an existing thread....(searching now for a thread)....well not too much luck. Information of course is out there in various threads. Some on scanning Velvia, some on black and white workflow, some with Silverfast, etc. Might be best to start a thread regarding scanning color negatives/slide film with Vuescan. Heck I will start it now.

I don't own Vuescan yet, was waiting to pull the trigger. But overall in 5ish years of scanning film, I only occasionally have rolls that look as expected (usually Velvia). Everything else often seems very muddy, or dark, or no tonal range, etc.

I think when I pick up a v700, I am going to pick up Vuescan.

In the end it doesn't matter what your set-up is as long as it works. However, the more I do these kinds of shots the more I understand the appeal of a dedicated studio space that isn't clogged with living room furniture.

Window light is lovely--and classic--but the biggest issue I have is trying to modulate it. Since I can't move the window I have to move the table if I want the light source to be relatively larger or smaller, whereas with a softbox you could just move the light stand and put it where you want it. That's why I am jealous of Ramiro's lighting; it seems more controlled and directional. My living room also has three other large windows in it so I have issues with light spill, but it's been working fine so far.

Interesting, thanks for sharing. And I guess my softbox is more like a empty cube of softbox material. I forget what it is called. It works pretty well to diffuse harsh light from a lamp. One side of the cube is open. I would love to sort out a few basic lights for still-life, portrait work, etc. As with everything so many options available. And my budget has been spent on 4x5 kit itself...plus buying another scanner in the near future. But in time, I am patient...

@Bazz8, yeah I have seen it before. Perhaps I need to go through it all again more carefully.

My ideal set up would be window light Jonathan. I like its quality much more over the soft box. And also, to be able to leave it there for days without having to dismantle everything after I am done. My place is so small I can only set up my light in a fixed spot, unfortunately too close to the background.

It's true that I have left this basic arrangement, essentially a table and various props, not to mention a couple of cameras on tripods, in the middle of our front room for a few weeks. My wife is very patient with me in that regard. I'll have to break it all down at some point, but not until I'm ready....or until we have guests.

Here's another image from that same spot. I think I got the color balance a bit better this time.

I just got back into photography after about 5-6 years away from it due to fighting cancer. This was shot about seven years ago. I built the camera (similar to the Bender design) and used a 210mm Schneider lens. I just retired in January, so I got myself a scanner for all the large format negatives I've got. I also bought a Epson 1430 printer.

Thanks man. Much appreciated. In hindsight, I knew better. Just had a lot on my mind learning how to use the camera, load film, etc.
That said, it is apparent from my thread that I still had/have lots to learn.

Are you just using a white card as backdrop?

And speaking of, I used one off to the side of my subjects, but was unsure of why. I just saw other people using it, I assume to reflect light to the shadow'd side of the subject. Well, I don't want to muddle up the thread. Thanks for the help/advice. Keep up the inspiring work.

Since the title of this sub-forum group is "Image Sharing and Discussion," I think we're fine talking shop between images. :)

I've been using an old slide projector screen for shots when I want a blank background. It folds up easily for storage but also deploys rapidly when needed, and works even in cramped spaces. If I angle it away fom the light source it drops to middle gray, whereas if I angle it toward the light it brightens up.

As for the white card, I tend to use that for fill when I have strongly directional light. For most of these recent photos I have a big window at about 80 degrees left of the camera, and this leaves the right side shadows a bit dark. The card just helps fill them in a bit. If the lighting were coming more from the front this would not be as important, at least not to me.

One last question, if space is not much of an issue (I have lots of space), then does it matter if the backdrop is far or near the subject? I assume farther is more optimal.

Yes it matters. The further away the less likely you are to get unwanted shadows. Also as it recedes in distance from the subject light falling on it decreases and thus the background becomes darker. A gray background can be rendered as any tone on the scale from black to white by altering the distance between it and the light source..

Jonathan: That last one is a beauty! I keep wanting to convince you to use a modern lens, current film, and get out past your front door :), but why change an absolutely winning strategy? (And on top of that, I usually don't even like flower photos, since everyone does them!)

You do very well shooting flowers in place. I always need to cut them down and bring them inside since it takes me way too long to get the composition I want. (Would you believe two hours sometimes? I've always like to photograph flowers: Color transparency, B&W negative, 35mm, 6x6cm, 4x5

Thank you Stone! I have 4 sheets of 8x10 Velvia 50 loaded for a trip that I have been wanting to make but the weather hasn't been ideal for it yet. Last week was all rain and this week it's bright clear skies with zero clouds so far.

I will hopefully see some clouds this evening.

Johnathon, thanks. I always attribute this special character to the lens, the Xenar 210mm from around the end of the ww2. In my eyes, the lens provides most incredible results when focused to ~ 1m - 1.5m, but I love it for landscapes too...

Great work, a common setup regarding lens, camera, film & developer and stunning results,

Lens: Schneider Symmar-S 210mm (Copal 1)
Film: Ilford Delta 100 (expired 2006)
Shutter Speed: 1/2s
Aperture: f5.6
Development: Self developed in Microphen Stock for 10mins. Additional time given due to pushing 2 stops. I failed to take both reciprocity and bellows extension into factor.
Scanning: Scanned via drymount on betterscanning holders using an Epson v700.
Details: Taken in Cypress, Texas. 2015. My third sheet of 4x5 film ever taken. Lighting was artificial. A lamp with LED bulb and pillowcase over lamp.

PS: It has been a long time coming. Thanks to all the help over the past months. Looking to more 4x5 in the future.
I had really bad white staining on the negative (this one in particular...but still have about 6 more to scan). I re-washed it in distilled water and photo-flo...it helped a bit.

Thanks for the kind comments. And yes this was with the v700 with a scratch. I have yet to find it on the glass or affect an image scanned. Only scanned 3 sheets or so of 4x5 so far. Spent some time calibrating it and learning how to dry-mount scan 4x5. And this weekend I was out of town.

Did manage to shoot 8 sheets of FP4 of an old building in a field...from a distance with my 90mm. Even though FP4 not ideal for landscapes (I don't think), it was given to me and so I used the rest of the box. Next is fresh HP5 that I bought.

Jesse, that's a beautiful composition and I love the color contrast. That lens has wonderful out-of-focus rendering too.

Tulips and their reflection
Added to my "For whom they are?" (http://www.vasina.net/?page_id=1305) series.

Shot with Chamonix 5×8" and Meyer Trioplan 260mm f:4.5 lens on 5×7" sheet of Adox CHS 25, developed in Rodinal (Foma R09 variant). Full frame.
Another time I ask a silly question...have a difficult time wrapping my head around all the movements/outcomes.
Is this achieved by front tilt and focusing on the flowers themselves? Or some sort of swing/Scheimpflug?

By the way, beautiful work.

Thanks a lot Johnathon.

Yes, the focus/blur effect was achieved by a quite simple front tilt - the camera was slightly above the flowers, the lens was tilted down and I stopped to only f/8...

Everyone posts so stunning pictures of flowers here so I had to also take a shot at it as there isn't going to be flowers here in Finland for a while from now.
