Christopher I use the V750 and the 64 version of Vuescan. I scan my negatives in RAW format. My point was that I have tried Galli's advise, but didn't get good result, surely, because I did something wrong...

I've got to try Vuescan then. Here's another go with 8x10 trying to hang onto the whites.

I'm sorry about the cancelled images above. Picasaweb has become funny an no longer allows linking to the images held there. I made the mistake of signing in to Google+ in order to remove Picasa's automatic tone 'enhancement' feature and thy wanted to tag all my friends, family and places for the benefit of some future thought-police. I opted out forthwith and all the links to my pictures disappeared.
Here's the last subject again, straight off my computer.

I was very sorry to see your Picasa disappear Christopher. Flickr is awful but it is good for keeping things in order if you forget about it's horrible design and the auto-sharpening.
A simple way of hosting images is with a free blogspot blog.

I really love this image. "Like a phoenix from a flame" came right into my mind.
I would love to see a real print of this image, like 16x20" size.

I was finally able to mount my CZJ Tessar 250/4.5 on its Sinar lens board.
Mine is a different model that the latest one which have a 77mm filter ring. It is a mid fifties model (red T) with a straight barrel and a 67mm filter ring which I very much appreciate.
So yesterday was testing time. All the more as I was also trying out Fomapan 100 (in its Arista guise) for the first time.

I went to the "Artist Access Day" at Filoli estates and gardens (http://filoli.org/) in Woodside CA last Thursday, the 10th. Once per month, on a Thursday, they allow people to use tripods or easels (not normally allowed) after 3:30PM if you've arranged in advance and paid a bit more. I have been and taken my smaller cameras before, but I wanted to bring the Ebony and use it on a tripod.

I guess I didn't check for falloff. This is with my 135/5.6 Symmar-S, which has a decent image circle for an old lens, but clearly not enough for the amount of front fall and rear rise that I used.

This was with one of Reinhold's Wollaston Meniscus lenses, a 190/3.3, at f/8. I tried the "Galli Shutter" and wanted to do 1/15th, but probably did more like 1/4, as it was over exposed. I should have put on my new cheap "Vivitar" variable ND filter.

These are both great Drew! The tulips are simply luminous!
And the rose is sharp as a tack but conveys a softness that is really wonderful.

Thanks! At 100%, the rose is very far from in focus, but I think f/8 on that lens gives just the right amount of softness/sharpness for me.

Stoney, Inadvertantly I overdevelop that sheet by a minute, the colours are certainly more saturated than reality, but the flower is a quirky combination of pink and purple.
This was developed correctly and is pretty well spot on to how it looks. There has been no editing.

So to prevent confusion I should correct myself: the Developing time I listed for the first image as 5 min was actually 6 min, the second image was 5 min. The 5 min was of because the temperature of the solution was 30c not 38c.

Last night I showed some of my 4x5" flowers (displayed on this thread) to a local LF photo group I belong to. All 8x8" inkjets from negative scans. Got some nice comments. THEN, I put up a few more [8x8" inkjets again] (not seen here for obvious reasons) and got even better comments. What was really amazing was, when I told them the last batch were all made with an iPhone 5, they all got up to look closer. They had a hard time coming to grips with that. They were all made AFTER I exposed a 4x5 neg/chrome, handheld, using professional lighting. I had to show them images of the 4x5 setup and the resulting iphone images on my phone before they believed me. I'd love to show them here, but...

I wanted to add to this thread me being a new member and all. I had some Neopan Across 100 which I had ruined 10 sheets on my prior attempt on 4x5 but it seems that this time around I'm doing a little better with it. Tech: Neopan at Iso 64 in Rodinal 1:50 through a 120mm Nikkor-AM on a Wista VX

I mean, you really framed this and exposed it well, and developed and (printed?) it well, lovely.

This thread is always so inspiring and it's inspired me to try something new (to me) with lighting - just minimal one bulb on the flower(s) to get a black background and surface. Both of these were shot on Fuji HR-T X-Ray film and tray developed in Rodinal 1:100.

Wow I love how centralized the flowers are and how black the rest. I haven't seen many develop prints in Rodinal (though I know it's possible) was this directly to the paper or was there a negative involved?

If you don't mind a bit of comment. Both of these have potential, but I feel that the bright out-of-focus flower is offering too much competition with the focused flowers and even winning for attention.

Wow your gallery is great! Is this all a type of Velvia?
Thanks Stone. All Provia 100F because that film has the most natural color fidelity for sunny conditions. My intent is to reasonably capture what I see in the outdoors and also post process to that end even if the result is less aesthetic or gaudy. It is a strong answer to those young photographers with digital cameras that think film can't be as relevant. See my Style & Philosophy sub-page.

Fujichrome 50 RFP. I also used a small flash for -1 stop fill. I did that often on 1:1 closeups of flowers. It adds a little snap to the photo. Flash sync was with the finger method, while the shutter was open for 1 second or more.

Cool info, yes adding some fill makes sense. Hah the finger method! :)

Photos of flowers can be really powerful, but they're so difficult to pull off without being cliché. I think this one is really strong. Tonally, it's beautiful. The angle is unexpected. I think you used a perfect amount of DoF and the bokeh is very subdued so that it doesn't overpower the image. Great work. The only thing I'm curious about is why you used a higher speed film on a still life... but then I always default to the lowest ISO I can get my hands on when I'm on tripod.

Thank you.
In 4x5 I only shoot TMY, which I rate at ISO 200. When it was affordable and readily available I shot it in 5x7 too, but now I shoot HP5+ instead in that format and rate it at 200 as well.
As I recall, the exposure was around 30 seconds. With a slower film it would have been even longer.

Here's something a little different. I x-rayed this magnolia blossom on HP5 11x14 film. For those interested, I believe I used 35KV, 3ma @ 6 minutes exposure. Developed D19 and scanned.
The Calla was about the same exposure and film and the Daffodil was on Polaroid 55PN. Exposure was made at 12KV, 60 Ma for about two minutes.
I bypass the camera and lens and go straight to film.
Enjoy!
These are gorgeous! Wish I knew more about the X-ray photography so I could do something along these lines... till then - I will admire people like yourself Don that create art like this!

I think that this might be my first photo post on this site.
First photo taken with my new-to-me Toyo 810G view camera. As I do not have the ground glass for the 8x10 back, I had to use the 4x5 back to take this photo.
Roses in a vase by the living room window. Not the most ideal lighting but I just set the flowers up as a test subject so I could play with the camera, mainly interested in seeing how close I have to be to the subject to fill the frame - and since I had the camera and subject already set up - I might as well take a photo!
Total test photo! Yes the background leaves a lot to be desired (not to mention the books and the yoga pamphlet under the vase), and I had zero control over the lighting - I was basically just playing around and decided to actually take a photo since everything was more or less set up. I also happened to have some 4x5 film holders already loaded.
This is not the sort of things I would normally photograph. I'm more interested in landscapes but with us being in the grip of old man winter, and me hating the cold, this is what I did.
Toyo 810G with 4x5 reducer back. Schneider - Kreuznach Symmar 355mm lens. Film used was Arista EDU 100 (expired 20011) rated at 100 and shot at 1/8th of a second at F11.
Tray developed in HC-110 for 7 mins at 18 degrees.

Daffodil in light tent
Velvia 100 ... too many years lying exposed without development ... the green of the stem is now a grey. There are some real luminous parts of yellow though that the scanner hasn't got a hope of capturing.
I still love Velvia even though the 100 variety is colour-subtle.
An exercise in bellows compensation and critical focussing as I recall. Heliar 210mm. Much of the flower is in good focus.
