I just acquired a Voigtlander Skopar 210mm Lens in Barrel. Does anyone know anything about this lens such as quality, value, coverage, etc... ? There is not much about them online. Thanks, Mike.

There are Skopar's and then there are Skopar's. Is it the coated APO Skopar f9? If it is, it is a heliar type, Ole will say Dynar, and you will find it perhaps the sharpest lens you own. They really are very nice.

If it's the old uncoated f4.5 Skopar, that is a rather ho-hum tessar type.

Mike,

http://www.cameraeccentric.com/html/info/voigtlandera/voigtlandera.html

I have Apo-Skopar 30cm, 45cm and 75cm. The last one I have not got a chance to use yet. I like the image quality of Apo-Skopar a lot. Sharp, yet rich.

I know a few people here own and like this lens. Jim Galli for example.

For a 210mm Apo-Skopar in barrel, I think it is worth $150-250 depending on the condition. I have seen it listed for $300-400 range, but that is overpriced. There is a nice Apo-Skopar 30cm on the ebay asking for $399 with a wooden box.

Hi Hugo,

do you really have a 75cm Apo-skopar? I thought they were only made up to 60cm (as shown in the camera eccentric literature).

I also have 45 and 60 cm apo-skopars and find them to be great lenses.

sounds like the lens in question from the original thread is a "plain old" tessar type skopar. I have one of these (24cm, f4.5) but havent used it much.

cheers

Tim,

Apo-Skopar 75cm is not their literature, indeed. Much bigger than the 60cm. I might have to have a camera built for it.

Sometimes the lens manufacturers don't put all their lenses in their literature. I have an Xenotar lens I couldn't find any information.

Cheers

btw, for Mike,

the 21cm skopar should cover 5x7 reasonably well and be an OK general purpose lens. Not worth too much (I paid about $25 for my 24cm skopar).

very cool, do you happen to have a picture of it you can post? Also, I'm curious when it was made, can you provide an approximate serial number?

I'll bet it weighs a ton, the 60CM is heavy enough...

thanks

Here you are. It weights about 9 Ibs with a series number of 3262589.

Thanks Hugo!

I finally did manage to find a reference for the 75 cm Apo Skopar in a Japanese book on Voigtlander of all places!

I'm still looking for a real-life 60 CM Heliar...

Tim,

I have never heard or seen a 60cm Heliar. My little 42cm Heliar weights a little under 10 Ibs and I have seen reports of 48cm Heliar weighting 12-14 Ibs.

Are you there is beast like that?

The 60cm f/4.5 Heliar was available as a pre-WWII model, covering 30x40cm according to Voigtländer. It was not continued after the war, the longest one was 48cm then.

Hi Hugo,

I have a 48cm Heliar --very big and very heavy. Also, it's an old uncoated lens from about the 1010's -1920's I'd guess (it's a "Voigtlaender and Son, New York, No. 8 Heliar, 19in f4.5, with a serial number in the 62,000's -which is in the range of numbers reserved for "US" lenses and make it hard to judge the date). It's a tremendous piece of glass, but I've managed to rig a lensboard to get it on my 8x10 Deardorff (with an extra tripod to hold the lens) and taken a few portraits which I've been happy with. On the whole though, I'll probably use my 36CM heliar much more on 8x10.

I've seen a few (3 total) 48 cm Heliars on auction sites. Mine was a real steal as the aperature was broken and turned out to be an easy fix. I believe I also saw somewhere on a post here that Kerry Thalmann said he has a 48cm Universal heliar.

The 60 CM f4.5 heliar appears often in old Voigtlander literature and reference books, but I've never seen one, even in an auction. I'll bet that there weren't many made, as it must have been a very expensive lens

60cm, 600mm f/4.5 Heliar.
Stumbled across this old post......I actually have a 600mm 4.5 Heliar, the barrel is 6" in diameter and the lens weighs about 17 pounds.

Not too many cameras can make a 60cm Heliar look smallish! I've had 2 48 cm's but never even seen a 60. Beautiful.

Old Thread, I know, but anyone here knows the coverage for the 45cm Apo-Skopar?

If Voigtlaender is to be believed -- see http://www.cameraeccentric.com/html/info/voigtlander_2.html -- 11x14 is a considerable stretch at infinity.
