One of my favorite portrait lenses. I know many beautiful pictures have been made with Heliars by people here. So I will start with my latest snapshot with a 36cm Heliar with a Kodak 2D.

window at the vfw, tonopah, nevada

The other day I bought a very derelict 210mm Heliar at the auction place. I wasn't expecting much, but was a bit more disappointed when it besides being filthy and corroded and stuck, also had been cleaned poorly and has lots of sleaks.

So, with everything cleaned up as good as I could do, I threw it in the truck. This is shot on 6½ X 8½ which is well outside the intended format for a 210 Heliar. Add to that I was lower than the window and used maximum possible rise. The negative was more than a pleasant surprise. Better than expected. Weak at the tippy top, but . . . my bad for asking it to do the impossible.

SO LETS SEE U'R HELIAR PICS PLEASE!

Beautiful stuff and I'm glad this thread is active again!

Here are a couple from yesterday done with a 240mm No. 4 Heliar that no one seemed to want at the auction and I was able to steal it.

http://tonopahpictures.0catch.com/Heliar/240mm_No9/240Heliar_00.jpg

That's my second Heliar with broken lens shade area. They were fragile. I just take some black gaffers tape and make 2 or 3 wraps to create a complete shade area. My stuff doesn't have to be pretty, it just has to perform, and this old cast-off really does!

Now you've given me cause for even more bragging. I paid $81 for the 210mm and $113 for the 240 So no deep pockets here. Bottom feeder . . . perhaps. They look awful. But they perform beautifully.

Hello, I have a Heliar 36cm f 4,5.
I want to order a flange to this lens. Unfortunately I’m not a mechanic... can anybody tell me how I can find the correct diameter and TPI for this lens.
Thanks!

I had a 360mm Heliar briefly a few years ago and visited a local machine shop to have a flange made for my specific lens board.

I found someone who would do the work after-hours on his own schedule, so he charged a reasonable price.

I brought the lens and board and left them with him. No problem.

Another option is some custom machining from SK Grimes (http://skgrimes.com/home).

A new to me Plaubel Makiflex Automatic arrived today from Prague. This one came with the Voigtlander Heliar 210mm F4.5 in Makiflex Auto iris. I've been watching this camera for years, decided to pull the trigger. So now I have three Auto Makiflexes and a Makiflex Standard. I really wanted the Heliar Auto lens............... I'll clean it up as I have time and it will go into rotation with my other cameras.

This one has over 26,000 actuations and has been customized a bit. Quite interesting

I use these cameras with 9x12cm and 4x5" film.

Clickma: I have concluded that as long as a portrait is basically competent (and yours is much more than competent, your lighting and posing is excellent) what really makes or breaks a portrait is the expression of the subject. You caught the young lady at the perfect moment, her expression conveys her feelings (at least during the portrait process) and makes me look at it again and again.

Both are fabulous. I have a 210 Heliar somebody in Vienna mounted into a Plaubel Makiflex Automatic Iris Lensboard. I see with your two examples why it so favored for LF Portraiture. So far I have only used mine for landscapes. I like how the world looks through the Heliar. I have a barrel 150mm f4.5 Heliar also I love to use in the studio for still lifes. I like that you can see the pores in the skin from a distance with beautiful rendition.

Nice shots, love the texture
It would be spectacular if the Plaubel covered 4x5

Thanks Kanishka :)

Actually I really really am liking shooting 9x9cm on 9x12cm and 4x5. The square format (like my Hassys and Mamiyaflexes), but with larger format fidelity. Arca Swiss made a 4x5 SLR but it has no where near the capabilities of the Makiflex system. Plaubel recommended it for Fashion and Reportage, it's really easily comfortably hand holdable. As they used to say, "Every studio needs an SLR camera".

Another view of my new Auto Makiflex with 210mm Auto Heliar. I'm quite happy with this camera so far. I photographed some roses on the back deck yesterday, the Heliar is sooooo beautiful to look through.

The 210 Heliar has been hacked into a Makiflex Auto-Iris Mount, so Auto Aperture Operation! This required a lot of skill to engineer and execute. A beautiful job and a one-of-a-kind lens, no doubt. I suspect the mount was orignally for a 210mm Xenar, which seems to be popular, I have seen a lot of them. Notice here how they have machined the front barrel of the lens, to get it to fit into the Makiflex mechanism.

36cm Heliar. Wet Plate Collodion (aluminumtype) on a 10 x 12 plate. Canham 10 x 12. Taught a class at Penland School of Art and Craft for the past twelve days. Took this photo on the last day as a thank you to Blain for sitting for the students over the the timing of the class. The class focused on positives (Aluminumtypes and Ambrotypes). Penland is a special place up in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Ever get a chance to take a class there (or teach one!) I highly recommend it. Communal interaction with as many as twelve or thirteen different disciplines over the near two weeks adds so many different perspectives to your photography work.
