Hey, all -

I'm looking for these such things, at this scale: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=015&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=250115036997&rd=1&rd=1. I've searched google best as I know how, but can't seem to find anything at this size. Anyone have any ideas? Looking to use them as a 4x5 focusing mechanism.

Thanks!
Scott

You can always try Small Parts. (http://www.smallparts.com/)

I was just shopping for the same thing. The rack selection is limited to one size now at Small Parts. And it isn't cheap.

You may want to look for an old 9x12 camera like a Vag and scrounge parts. I have bought ones cheap that were missing a lens and were broken, peeling leather, etc. I have a 6x9 version that I bought for $2.

You will get other useful parts too.

The stuff at McMaster Carr is good - I've used it before for DIY cameras. The no longer ship overseas though  so I have been forced to find (a much more expensive source) in Australia

I think I'll go through McMaster/Carr on this first iteration. They have the R&P, all the knobs, the steel rod, and I'm sure anything else I can think of needing. Awesome site!

you may also want to check out stock drive products, sdp-si.com. just reserve an hour or two (and hide your credit card)

I also use McMaster-Carr. Their supplier for rack & pinion gears is Boston Gear. I haven't bothered to find out if it's cheaper to buy directly from BG, but perhaps you may wish to.

Another supplier much like McMaster is Grainger. Their selection is not quite as extensive on some items, but their prices are competitive. They do sell retail. http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/wwg/start.shtml

I added geared focusing to my Gowland Pocket View (like the camera, hated the friction drive focusing) and replaced the gear rack on my Durst 1200. In both cases I bought the gears and racks from McMaster. If you know what the parts are called, you can find every standard part used to make a Gowland or a Galvin from McMaster, so chances are Jim and Peter used McMaster as well.

If you still have problems we've got www.hpcgears.com here in the U.K. I've never dealt with them but they seem to have some good stuff.

For camera parts, reading the description at McMaster-Carr should be enough information. If you want more detail you'll need to consult a gear design treatise or something like Machinery's Handbook.

I get such stuff at www.newport.com. It tends to be expensive but it is precision optical gear and perfect sophisticated for home projects.

Tim,
whereabouts in Melbourne did you get your stuff. I'm looking at making my own camera and will need gear like that.
Thanks

go to Stock Drive Products Website, try www-sdp-si.com. and order a set of free catalogs. included in the catalogs is what amounts to an entire treatise on geartrain design, as well as many other related issues. Definately worth the time to ask for the catalog.
