I have owned an Epson 4990 for a couple of years now and have scanned a couple of hundred or more 4 X 5 transparencies and negatives on it. I recently purchased an Epson V700 and have been attempting to scan the same images on it. I am having problems with getting the image light enough to match the transparency. Everything but the totally white areas are very dark. I know the 4990 had limited dmax but I thought the V700 had as good or better. I am finding out that it doesn't seem to scan the images as well as the 4990. Has anyone experienced this problem or am I perhaps doing something wrong? I am using Silverfast 6.5.0r5 software which I got just a couple of weeks ago. I also used Silverfast AI with the 4990. I have tried Velvia 50, Velvia 100, Velvia 100F and Astia 100F and all seem to have the same problem although it is worse with the contrastier films which leads me to believe it is the dmax. I am using the standard 4 X 5 holder on both scanners and not using wet mount. Thanks!

Bill...

Something is wrong with your scanning...I use a V700 almost every day, and usually with the Epson software and get great scans of all emulsion types of transparencies.

Try the Epson software next...also check to make sure that all your preferences/settings are correct, color management stuff, etc...

Here's a link to a recent scan:

It sounds like you aren't setting the white point correctly. Are you useing the manual settings and setting your own white point or are you letting the software do it for you?
