I recently bought Sinar P-type carrier and the 5x7 back to upgrade my 4x5 F2. The carrier has a black lever protruding to the back and a graded scale which goes from 40 to 10 and 10 to 40. Here is the link to the photo showing what I mean: http://albums.photo.epson.com/j/ViewPhoto?u=4367517&a=32499388&p=75431350
Could you, dear Sinarists, explain me what this lever and scale is for?

cheers,

Jan

I believe that scale is to do broad "tilts" of the rear standard. You align the standard up with the number. 10 degrees up to 40 degrees, forward or backward, then you do minor corrections with the geared tilt above. The lever is a locking lever to keep the rear standard in whatever position you tilt it to.

Base tilt. If you can't get enough tilt using the regular geared asymmetric tilt, you can do part of the tilt as a base tilt. Or if you want to do an indirect rise or fall using tilts you can tilt the rail and then use the base tilts on front and rear to bring the standards back to plumb, and use the asymmetric tilts as you normally would.

If you are new to the Sinar system I would suggest getting a copy of Sinar's basic intro to large format photography as it is all about their system.
