It's in Fremont, OH. A lot of people think it's the Psycho House, but it isn't. The Fremont Jaycees use it for Halloween. It looks like a huge house, but it's suprisingly small. I always wanted to buy it and fix up the inside to live in but leave the outside alone.

Here is a poster of the B&W version I made to use in front of my house for Halloween. It's the hit with the neighborhood kids.
BTW it's 6x8' the original "scan" was done with a Olympus E-20 (when I was first getting into digital printing and such):) I printed it on my Epson 9600 at only 360 dpi believe it or not. ;) It's been a fun print.
Struan,
That's a great picture, I especially like the perspective. :)
Somehow, pictures of European streets (and of snowy scenes, but that's beside the point here) always keep reminding me why I like so much being here in LA.

I am not sure if this counts or not. If it is OK, this photo was taken in 1988 from Weehawken Park, Wehawken, NJ looking across the Hudson River toward Midtown Manhattan, NYC. Taken in November as evidenced by the colors on the Empire State Building. I am not sure which street we are looking down, but you can see the traffic streaming down one of the streets toward the Hudson River.

Thanks for the compliment.
When we came to central Madrid we arrived in one corner of the Plaza Santa Ana and foolishly drove up the side leading to the front entrance of our hotel. Naturally, we should have realised that the correct thing to do is to crawl slowly round the other three sides of the square. By the time we did realise this we were committed to driving straight past the door of the lobby. It took us forty minutes to get back there :-)
Mind you, I still prefer towns where the car is not king. Madrid has a few small things that make the effort worthwile.

That's an incredible shot DrP. It feels as though I'm standing in the church itself. What movements did you use? Was it just keep standards parallel and some rise?
Rory_5244
29-Mar-2007, 22:03
Just as an aside Dr Pablo (if I'm permitted): I was looking at your Monte Alban, Oaxaca album taken with a Canon Digital Rebel. I notice the pictures have a certain 'look' - sort of 'painterly' and, um, slightly lacking in depth. This is exactly why I was not happy with the Rebel, though I was told the problem could be fixed in Photoshop. I was just wondering if you noticed that?
DrPablo
30-Mar-2007, 00:45
Hi Rory,
Thanks for the nice comment. I used a LOT of front rise for this cathedral picture. I could probably calculate how much, but if you look at the vanishing point of the horizontal lines you can see that my eye level is more or less the altar, but the middle of the print is considerably above that. No other movements. I wouldn't use tilt in a setting like this, because I'd tilt the focal plane off the ceiling.
As for the Monte Alban gallery, I attribute the look there more to the lens I was using than the camera. I used the Canon TS-E 24 for the majority of those shots, and I find the image quality of that lens to be pretty lousy. It produces excellent colors and contrast, but it's an extremely soft lens that makes those colors and contrast look sort of fake. The lighting was also a bit harsh there -- we were there in mid-day with top-lit cloud cover, so that didn't help.
I actually don't have any problem with the way my 300D makes images look. If you check out my gallery from Senegal (http://www.pbase.com/drpablo74/senegal_2005), for example, you'll see more natural appearing photos (mainly because of better lenses and better lighting). I've moved to mostly film not so much because I had a problem with the 300D, but because I was getting very sick of the digital workflow.

Well this was my first ever sheet of film I shot on my 5x4. Just a young pup and all.
Erm lets see technical stuff ... MPP Mk8 Wray 89mm ( for sale if anyone would wants it, much cheapness) Some amount of seconds on Ilford Ortho Pro developed in Tmax in a print tube that is 100% invalauble now. Actually my drum is better than the nighmarish Jobo 5x4 reel.
Hope you all like. I have about 7 months of stuff since then I am still slowly scanning spotting ... etc ..
Oh the building is a cancer patient centre in Dundee Scotland designed by Frank Gehry. I went in and looked around and was quite moved to see so many people waiting to die. In all my youth I felt quite like mortality was showing itself straight to my face.
Anyway. Will post again soon.

What a fabulous old building. Could you work on the roof of a vehicle perhaps and drop the front so the fence gets lost. I have the identical problem with the Goldfield School and the Rhyolite train depot here in Nevada.

Thanks, I really like the building and plan to revisit it.
There's an embankment you can shoot from and get the fence below the bottom edge of the building. You do have your butt hanging out in traffic, though. I think when I reshoot I'm going to try that for a different angle.
I also want to see if I can talk to the management of the area and offer them a print in exchange for access inside the fence. You never know, I might get lucky! :)

Here's one that got away. I've been watching the colour casts on the walls all summer, waiting for the day everything came together *and* there was time to set up the camera. Never happened, and now the sun is too low in the sky, so all I have is a digisnap with photoshop perspective corrections. Next year perhaps - at least I know when my time window starts and stops.
One of the things I like about photography is the way it forces me to pay attention to the seasons. Either because of sundial effects as here, or with things like finding an evening when sunset coincides with the high spring tides. Just planning makes me look harder.
Here's another one that got away (was supposed to be an arquitecutre picture, but I was a bit slow setting up ;) ):

Again, please feel free to comment or critique. I am still on a learning curve with this camera.

paulr, that's the problem with LF shooting. Setting up way too long. But it can bring some very rewarding results anyway... like that one of yours :D ;)
As a minor contribution, herewith a couple of interiors from earlier this summer, a volunteer documentation job of a Presbyterian church that is soon to close. Wista M 4x5, Fujinon 90mm, Ilford Delta 100. Long view--rear rise, 1 minute @ f45. Pulpit detail--slight rear rise, 2.5 minutes @ f45. About as evenly lit an interior as I've ever had the pleasure of photographing, but no AC on a 90-degree day!

struan, i loved the light.
Thanks. It's my own hallway, which is a Swedish take on a Whitehall Farce stage set. All year we get a wonderful play of light filtering through our neighbours' big trees, bouncing of the copper window cupolas and reflecting off the floor and walls. The previous owner's oddball take on smoke alarm placement adds a little private punctum for the family. The only downside is that I had planned to fill one wall with a large panoramic print: The Decoratrix thinks not.
I love the decadent Kodachrome-y colours in your winery shots. And the hoses. Not sure about those second hand control panels from Chernobyl though....

thanks too, i always shoot chromes for editorial work (i didn't submit the first 3), till they make a 6x6 digiback that is...
yeah, i figured it was your place, that northen light is so clean looking though. the light here is not so aggressive now, still pretty challenging though, here's a hotel room i stayed so often i got to know the seasonal light:

No, I did not take this photo but thought would be appropriate for this thread and community. I love this incredible and unique arquitectural image made in 1914:

Here are a gaggle of 3 that I did in my hotel room in Las Vegas earlier this week with a 4X5 Speed Graphic and a no-name 5ish inch petzval. I used Efke 25 film and feel I approached the tonality of 8X10 with this set-up. Camera and lens are both 4-sale although I haven't listed them yet.

A friend of mine took a workshop with Ruth Bernhard. She challenged everyone to find a subject to photograph within a relatively confined space. My friend said it was amazing what people found.
Isn't it one of the great things about photography and other forms of art? Things just look different than they would if we just took everything we see for granted.

An easy way of doing that is firstly NOT to mess with your controls. just zero everything.. and try to aim the camera at the same height a distance a ways... and try to get it pointed perpendicular to whatever wall/bldg you're trying to align to. Only THEN - once you have it all orthogonal... THEN try doing a rise, etc... tilts, swings, etc will only confuse matters. It really helps if you're pointing at a reflective material. Then you can just aim the lens at itself - assuming an orthogonal (square flat and even) surface...

Jackson Square, New Orleans, early on a Sunday morning:
Ed, Without a doubt this image has some of the nicest tones I've seen in a while. Great contrast, rich tone. Obviously this is a digital copy we are looking at. Is this a digital post processed image or a really nice silver print?
