I'm about to have 2 or 3 30x40 color prints face mounted on plexi, but i'm a little unsure how to hang them. are there wall brackets commercially available or am i going to have to make something myself? ideally i'd like the prints to sit an inch or so off the wall...

I have my prints face mounted by the Dutch diasec specialist Wilcovak (http://www.wilcovak.nl/uk/index.htm). They offer this frame (http://www.wilcovak.nl/uk/diasec/ophangsysteemtekst.htm). I am sure you can find something comparative where you live. Ask where you have your prints face mounted.

My lab does something the same thing as Jan's. They use 4 aluminum profiles from 70x100cm up. Anything smaller gets 2 aluminum profiles (one on top and one on the bottom part).

Checked some artwork at a local art dealer, they use the same system too.

Perhaps you should check with the lab that mounted your prints, they can attach the aluminum profiles in-house.

Cheers,

Edwin

i'll check with the lab doing the work. thanks for the info.

one other question:
i'm assuming i need to have the print sandwiched rather than just one layer of plexi in order to hang it like this right?
or does the mounting process make the back of the print more durable?

My face-mounted prints are backed with Sintra, but I've seen some small ones backed with normal mounting board.

Best,
Helen

That's correct.
No the mounting process in itself (so only sticking plexiglass, e.g., to the front) does not make the back of the image more durable.

Face mounted prints are generally hung with inset box frames and/or wood mounting cleats. They're secured by epoxy, thus the need for sandwiching the print with a second backing material of some sort. See page two of this http://www.autumncolor.com/newsletters/NewsletterSept2006.pdf for an example.

ok one more thing then (or maybe two) -

im thinking that ill hang the piece by floating the picture on the plexi and then screwing into the wall from the front of the plexi through some sort of spacer behind the plexi (hope that made sense.) does that sound ok?

is there any need to worry archivally about not sealing the back of the print?

thanks again.
