View Full Version : Wide Angle Brass Lens for 13x18cm?

5-Feb-2007, 05:58
Hello all,

I'm after a vintage, brass, wide-angle lens for a 13x18cm, but don't know what to look for on ePay. I've enjoyed taking dry-plate portraits with an old 10'' jamin lens*, and would like to venture out into landscapes. Can anyone suggest a lens suitable for this purpose?

*The Jamin lens was a gamble (as with many things on eBay) - luckily I got what I was looking for.

I don't know exactly what you're looking for but I saw this (http://cgi.ebay.com/WOLLENSAK-5X7-EXTREME-WIDE-ANGLE-lens_W0QQitemZ170077246514QQihZ007QQcategoryZ30076QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem). It looks pretty good, though I don't know the exact focal length.

Thanks for the link. I think that's what I'm looking for.

An excellent possibility would be a Zeiss Protar Series V. They are not uncommon as they were made for very many years and under license by several makers, B&L and Ross amongst them. The size marked 5 X 7 is 4 3/8" (112mm) focal length.

They are usually found in barrel mount, as the cells are so close together as to make shutter mounting difficult.

I asked the seller of the lens I linked to and he replied that the focal length is about 4 inches (~100mm) so it's a very wide lens on 5x7 and probably doesn't cover it at all stops, I would guess.

Forget the anastigmats, and look for a 150mm / 6" WA Aplanat or Rectilinear.

In fact I may have a spare one, but can't check that this week...

Hi there, and thanks for the pointers. I'm now on the lookout for a barrel design of ~10-15cm

Tahnks again

As it happens, I have a 5x7 B&L Protar V (as mentioned above by Ernest Purdum) that I've been meaning to sell. Reply if you're interested...

The 6 1/2" X 8 1/2" Protyar V has a focal length of roughly 14cm.

Make that "Protar". My fingers are too big.
