I've never been more than an adequate B&W printer, and since mostly switching to digital capture I don't even have the equipment to make large prints.
While I know of a few great commercial B&W printers (such as M-V Labs in NYC), I wonder where one would send a digital file to have custon work done by a master printer?

Tyler Boley (http://www.custom-digital.com/services/index.html) is one, without doubt. Amadou Diallo (http://www.diallophotography.com/digitalprintmaking/index.html) is another. Then there's always Nash Editions (http://www.nasheditions.com/) or Cone Editions (http://www.coneeditions.com/pricing.html), two of the old established order and the pioneers in digital B&W printing. I've had good luck with Rod Landucci at Infinite Editions (http://www.infinite-editions.com/) myself.

These guys are, in my opinion, the best of the best.

I would definitely second the recommendation for Elevator Digital. Specifically, contact Bob Carnie. These guys are exposing with a Lamba at maximum resolution and printing on Ilford fiber papers. If you like the idea of combing your digital files with real silver prints this lab is one of the few places in the world doing it.

Bill has been my master printer for the last 12 years. He was the founder for EverColor Fine Art and Bill has over 50 years experience. I am his 7th (007  :D) client since he went back on his own as Laser Light Photographics.

I have always been a supporter to Charles Cramer. He does wonderful work. Originally, he worked in Dye Transfer he is now working in digital output. He teaches several workshops in Yosemite for the Ansel Adams workshop series.

I have learned black and white printing for many people but no one has left such a lasting impression on me than the artist, Lenny Eiger of Eiger Photo.

I apprenticed for Lenny Eiger for a year and learned about seeing in black and white in a way that was true to life and allowed me to go from creating harsh prints to rich and delicious prints that appear to be three dimensional.

Lenny has mastered the traditional black and white forms of printing, including Platinum and Azo, which has allowed him the ability to make inkjet prints which are better that these other traditional printing methods which are the benchmark of black and white printing.

I am forever indebted to this wonderful artist who has made me a better artist, printer, and person.

I'll throw my hat into the ring also. I've been printing for 20 years. Today I am printing using the latest Epson printers and the new Canon ipf9000 for pigment ink prints up to 60 inches wide.

The New York Times just did a story on a large show I scanned and printed for the Museum of the City of New York (mcny.org).
