View Full Version : Something better than Acros in 4x5?

Greetings!

I've recently caught the night-shooting bug, and with it the very quick conclusion that Acros is excellent for the task. I have a Rapid Omega 200 that's eating 120Acros as fast as I can feed it, but some of what I'm shoot could benefit from movements. To that I'm considering pulling out the Calumet 4x5 which has seen little use.

I know I can purchase Acros in 4x5 Quickloads, but I'll need to drop coin on a holder, something I'd rather avoid. Is there ANYTHING close to Acros in terms of reciprocity failure that this learned group might recommend?

Thanks in advance,
Craig

You can order Acros sheet film in loose sheets from www.unicircuits.com

Aha! There it is! 4x5 sheets of Acros! Thanks!

Mind the shipping from Japan, though. If you want something locally available, TMX will be the closest you can get; it's head and shoulders above any other ISO 100 film except Acros.

Recently, I have been shooting Acros in 4x5 and 8x10 exclusively. Its a beautiful film, and love it tremendously. Dirk Rossler, who owns Megaperls is on here sometimes, he is truly a nice guy and can ship anywhere.

Regards.

Gary

Gary, thanks for the feedback on Dirk. Good to know he's reputable.

Great pictures, BTW.

Thanks, Ed. Will be fun to see these in 4x5 at some point, if I can get em shot before the structures are razed to make way for faster/cheaper/better.

Thanks for the mention Diane and Gary. Indeed, good to know that I am reputable (got to tell the in-laws)!

As for the original question "Something better than Acros in 4x5?" I suppose the answer has to be Acros in 8x10"! ;-)

Dirk, I am glad to have found your shop. Will be placing an order in the near future.

Does quickload Acros film work well in a Kodak readyload holder?

It's said to work well, yes, but you may have to compose around a hole in what most of us consider the image area of the film -- at least some Fuji Quickloads have this hole, if not all of them.

Thanks for the replies. A hole in the image area???

A 1.5mm hole near one corner for hanging the film. It is just on the edge of the image area.

Compose a little in from the edges or that hole will drive you nuts.

Incredible that people are worried about this.

Acros in regular (20 sheet boxes) loose sheets is also occasionally but not consistently available from Badger Graphics and Midwest photo. You may want to check there first. Price tends to be fairly high though but is probably competitive with ordering from Japan. I managed to snag some recently expired Acros quickloads earlier this year from another vendor. Wish I had bought more. They ended up being cheaper than the loose sheets.

Sincerely,

Hany.

Did you crop the hole out of that picture? I do contact prints showing the edges of the film and can usually see some evidence of the hole. But since I really like the reciprocity characteristics of Acros, I use it. The hole doesn't really bother me. I use it to hang my film to dry.

Looks like you are using it for the purpose as intended.

The image is a "full frame" i.e. image area, but not to the borders of the sheet itself. On the top left you can see a bit of the hole. If someone gets upset about that, they probably should not use 35mm film either, cos that has lots of more holes around the frame.

Badger seems to have it at the moment in standard sheet film. I just received two boxes of it in 4x5.

Michael, thanks for the heads-up on Badger. I ordered 100' of Acros 135 from Dirk, but was holding out on the 4x5. Badger saved me a bit of coin, have 40 sheets inbound now.

Were you selling a Graphic View with custom back recently?

Nope. Until a couple of weeks ago I hadn't had a 4x5 in years. Then I bought a Speed Graphic. Saw the exchange on Acros and decided, Hey! Now I have a camera I can try it with. But darned if I haven't been too busy with 1.5 full time jobs to go shoot my new film in my new-old camera!! If I see I graphic view come up, I might try to outbid you on it.

Man I hear ya. I've got an old Calumet (with the skinny-assed rail) and borrowed Triplet in a dial-set Compur, some J&C Classic 400 and a few sheets of Ortho. Now, 40 sheets of Acros on the way. I need to get out and shoot, but I tend to grab the F4s more than anything.

One good report is that my Unicolor print-drum arrived today, so now I just need to cut some separators for it and get some shots ready, plug in my roller base and go to town. Then, steal a 4x5 scanner.

:)

I got 300k motorcycle enthusiasts in town this week for Fayetteville, Arkansas' 2006 Bikes Blues and BBQ, so no time to experiment this week for sure. I'll shoot plenty of 135 though.

At any rate, danke for replying. Hope you find some time soon to play with the Graphic.

C.
