View Full Version : Poll: What format do you shoot?

Ron Marshall

I am curious how many shoot 4x5 and a larger format, also how many only shoot a larger format.

ULF is all non-panoramic formats larger than 8x10, ie. 11x14, 16x20, 20x24.

Panoramic are 4x10, 5x12, 7x17, 8x20 etc.

There isn't an option for 5x7 and 8x10. That's discrimination.

Well, since you're going to ignore the even dozen "miniature" formats I shoot more or less regularly (2x16 mm, 35 mm half and full, 828, all three 127, all three "standard" 120, and 9x12 cm), I guess I "only" shoot 4x5. Though I *do* consider 9x12 cm to be large format...

4x5 in colour, 8x10 in B&W and Richard Ritter is finishing a new back for a 11x14 camera that I hope to start shooting with soon.

WAAAAAAY too few options!

I shoot 6.5x9cm, 9x12cm ,4x5", 5x7", 13x18cm, 18x24cm, 24x30cm, and 30x40cm.

So both smaller than 4x5", and ULF, and so on...

35mm, 4x5, 8x10 (mostly), 7x17 soon.....hopefully very, very soon.

35mm is color & B&W, everything else is b&W only.

Currently 35mm, 6x6, and 4x5. I have dusted off a Rochester Premo Pony #3 and I am going to check the bellows for light leaks. If the bellows is good then I'll get some 5x7 holders and what kind of images I can make with it.

Mostly 8x10 (b/w & color) & 5x12 (b/w only). I do still shoot some 35 mm, 6x6, 6x78, 6x9, and 4x5 though.

I think your survey understates the use of 5x7. I shoot 4x5, 5x7, and 4x10. I believe 4x10 and 5x7 are generating a lot of interest lately, and more and more people are using these formats.

I agree. I think many people shoot more than two formats, so the way I designed the survey is too restrictive.

35, 4x5, 5x7, and 8x10

I promised myself I wouldn't go larger than 8x10. But then... I said that after going to 5x7!

So, who knows? :)

Your poll doesn't allow for 8x10 and 8x20 (panoramic).

I've just recently started a new series with the speed graphic so there is some 4x5 also. Maybe about 5%.

I voted 4x5 & panoramic, but that may not be technically correct, since my panoramas are done with a split darkslide giving two 2x5 exposures on the same sheet of film, which are then merged.

I only use a 5x7 for my personal work. I use 4x5 and a DSLR for Architectural Work.
I can’t believe the number of people using 5 or 6 formats. I have several cameras but I only use one of them.

5x7 (or more correctly, 13x18!) is my new LF format. I don't think I ever will be able to go bigger. 8x10 is nice in theory but expenses and logistics doesn't make it practical. And for 8x10 to happen, I'll have to get my closet skeleton Korona back together first...

I use medium format (6X4.5, 6X7 and 6X9), 5X7, 7X17 and 12X20.

Too many formats I am afraid. One very smart photographer once told me, real photographers use one format (either 35mm and Leica, 6X6 and Hasselblad or 4X5 and Sinar), and one developer (D76). I was not smart enough to follow her advice.

I actually use 4x5, 5x7 and 8x10. For many years it was pretty much 8x10, but now suffering from age and health issues I am using more 5x7 and ocassionaly the 4x5. The 8x10 requires more energy to set up, so I have pretty much put it out to pasture.
