View Full Version : Graduated ND filters for a Toyo lens hood?

Was wondering if someone has come across these type of filters that will fit the compendium hood filter slot. I understand about purchasing a Cokin setup for this and then there are a number of filter options but would like to use what I have if possible. Unaware of Lee filters of this type. Spoke to Singh Ray and it would be custom work, and I'm thinking I would probably have to sell LF equipment to afford (maybe not though). Any ideas?

My impression is that you'd either have to get a custom ND grad filter to fit, or make a frame/holder out of appropriate material (e.g. a file folder). Before going too far, though, check your shade. Toyo has made several models of their shades, some with filter holder, other without. Some that have them are made such that the filter slides in from the side, so they really wouldn't work with an ND grad. Conventional filters could also be cut from 6"x6" gels, of course.

I just realized that I didn't give enough info about the shade. It holds filters 4" square and filters do fit in from the side, guess that writes off using the shade. Who makes 6" gels?

. . . Who makes 6" gels?

Kodak used to, but I'm not sure what's available currently. I believe B&H stocked them, but their site seems to be down at the moment.

Not positive about gelatin filters, but both 4x4 and 6x6 inches are standard sizes for motion picture camera matteboxes. 4x4 is a standard for 16mm, super 16, and some DV cameras. 6x6 is a panavision size.
