For those of you finding yourselves traveling cross-country on the Interstate 80 corridor this summer/autumn, please consider making a stop at the CLUI facility in Wendover, Utah. In Gallery 1 (http://www.johnbrintonhogan.com/current.html) you’ll find an exhibition of pictures from my (ongoing) project VACATION (http://www.johnbrintonhogan.com/vacthum.html).

The Center for Land Use Interpretation (CLUI) is an organization dedicated to better understanding human interaction with the landscape, as well as their impact upon it. The organization has a number of facilities nationwide, and has collected a vast archive of information relating to their mission. More info may be found at their site (http://www.clui.org/).

To attempt to describe the Great Salt Lake Desert in general (and Wendover specifically) is almost impossible using words alone. Suffice it to say that it’s one of the most interesting and mysterious places in N America. Mining/extractive operations, myriad railroads, land-speed racers (http://www.scta-bni.org/), movie sets, and dozens of military installations (ranging from “top secret” to totally abandoned) are just a sampling of the attractions set in a spectacularly stark and beautiful landscape. Wendover is located on the border of Utah and Nevada, so (relatively tiny) Las Vegas styled casinos are part of the strange mix of culture and commerce in the area. There are more than a few land-art projects within easy driving distance, including Holt’s “Sun Tunnels (http://www.clui.org/clui_4_1/ludb/sites/UT3126.html)” and Smithson’s “Spiral Jetty (http://www.robertsmithson.com/earthworks/spiral_jetty.htm),” amongst other, lesser-known works.

The CLUI facilities are located on the old Wendover Airbase- WWII home of the Enola Gay (http://www.polarinertia.com/january03/hangar4.htm) and Atomic Bomb flight-training program (check the interesting museum at the airport tower). Art/photo aficionados will reconize numerous elements (http://www.artnet.com/magazine_pre2000/reviews/cassidy/cassidy6-30-4.asp) from Misrach's Desert Cantos, many exactly as they appeared in the photographs from 2 decades ago.

Directions to the galleries can be found here (http://www.clui.org/clui_4_1/alm/wenddir.html).

So, have fun. -J

Paul Stimac asked:
do you live there?

No,actually. I live far, far away.

But I've given it thought. Cost of living can't be beat. Just make sure to bring your own money, 'cuz there ain't none there.
