Is Bruce Barnbaum's book as good without the photo illustrations? I'm considering buying the new version without the photos available directly from his website versus trying to buy one used which would be double or triple the price.

Thanks
Chris

There are many incisive thoughts in the book that work independently of any specific images. But without the images, the sense is that the thoughts are merely theory devoid of what should happen in actual practice. Even a used edition with photos would be worthwhile.

I have the original. The text is very worthwhile, as are the photos. They are worth the premium at perhaps double the price, but certainly not more.

For the price of an earlier version ($88 at Amazon), you could get the latest version, his DVD at Lenswork, which includes many photos as well as an excellent interview, and the recent PhotoTechniques reprint of his articles and still have some money left over for gas ;-) All three are a worthwhile investment.

I have the old version with photographs. I would be happy to have it even if it did not have the photographs.

I have both and they compliment each other. I also believe the one without the photos is clearly worth it. There is a lot of useful information as well as insights into Bruce's philosophy of photography.

Eric, I have not seen the newer edition, without photos. Is it much different from the earlier edition of "The Art of Photography"?

I am just new to LF photography..have never seen his book with the pics. So his new book for me was very worthwhile and worth it. Good for LF and MF. Gerry
