Was looking to see what's new in the world of monitors and ran across some interesting articles on LED back-lit LCD monitors. NEC has a 21.3" model called SpectraView ($6600 on B&H ). See an in-depth review and specs here: http://graphics.tomshardware.com/display/20051028/index.html. The prime benefits are excellent color fidelity and wide gamut (it covers Adobe RGB). Has anyone seen or played with one of these?

Seems promising. Hopefully by the time my trusty CRT dies these will be affordable.

It's new technology, early adopters finance R&D until the production reaches mass levels. Then the price starts going down.

If the production reaches mass levels, that is. Adobe RGB is great news, but not that many people really need it, when you think of it.

Luckily, what people need and what they buy are not always in step :). Anyway some form of LED backlighting is apt to replace current fluorescent tube method over time, since it's just more efficient and environmentally sound (due to mercury content in the fluorescents).

Early adopters finance R&D if there's a clear benefit to the new technology. An Apple 30" Cinema Display at full price is $2,499. Like I said, it better be good at that price.

Eizo's ColorEdge CG220 uses a CCFL backlight, and has a slightly smaller gamut than the NEC (Eizo claims 100% of Adobe RGB, and NEC claims 107%). While expensive, it is cheaper than the NEC, and consumes 10% less power.

Don't count out the CCFL, yet.

Just this week Eizo has announced an upgrade to CG 221 with two significant improvements. A white paper is available on their site.
