Do I need a wide angle device for the Linhof Master technika in order to properly use the Schneider Super-Angulon 58mm f/5.6XL ?
On infinity it sits near the border of the inner base and I have to lower the bed by +/- 30° for not having vignetting.

I've never tried it on my MT as it lives on my Technar.
But I couldn't imagine using this lens on an MT without the wide-angle device. Here it's shown with the center filter.
I've found the Linhof wide-angle device a great substitute to helical focussing. While not the same, it does a really good job.

Yes you need a wide angle focusing device or a helical focus ring. With the wide angle focus device there is a problem that te focus dial intervers with the centerfilter it you use one. I had mine modified for use of the centerfilter. See picture. A helical or Linhof 2000/3000 will be more practical.

Linhof switched to a helical lensboard design and discontinued the wide angle device in the mid 1990's.

I think the main reason was the new wide lenses were getting too large, as Gary explains.

The wide angle device is great because it can be a single solution for several lenses at once as a helical board is limited to a single lens. But the newer wides get very tight and you are limited to only lenses that can be mounted on a Linhof 23 board as that is what fits inside the WA device.

There are a couple of Non-Linhof designs available as well...

This is a ALVANDI helical mount...

In my case, I remedied the centre filter issue by reversing a recessed lensboard. It's only an issue with the CF at the infinity setting naturally and I can focus from about 30cm to inf.

That's a tidy mod.

Linhof made 3 versions of the wider angle focusing device for 4x5.
The first was for the Technika III (wont fit on a Master without clipping) and that one is chrome faced and the lens mounts directly on it.

The next version is usually tan in color and accepts the flat 23 boards from the 23 Technika III & IV cameras.
It cannot take the modern style 23 board because of the light-trap design on modern lensboards.

257374

The last style is generally dark grey and has a recess to allow for the modern black 23 boards with the protruding lighttrap at the back.
(not sure if it can take the early flat aluminum boards)

A 5x7 device was also made, in tan and grey for 4x5 Technika boards, but I think both colors are the same...

Thank you all for the quick responses and advice!
So I will search for a WA device and a small lensboard.

In the mean time I bought a Linhof Wide Angle Focusing Device. But now I see that my lens Schneider Super-Angulon 58mm f/5.6 XL - mounted in Prontor Prof 01S shutter is way too big to mount on the small lens board (74x81mm) and to fit in the wide angle device...

Any advice which lens (and shutters) fit in the wide angle device?
Thanks

In the time that I used the Wide Angle Device I had my Super-Angulon 58mm f/5.6 XL mounted in a copal 0 shutter. But I will warn you that you still cannot use a centerfilter that way. I moved on to a helical mount. Which I still use although I have a linhof 2000 now.

Can you show a photo of the lens, the lensboard and the wide angle device?

Hereby the pictures of the Linhof Wide Angle Focusing Device and the Schneider Super-Angulon 58mm f/5.6 XL mounted on Prontor Prof 01S. I also bought a small lensboard (74x81mm) Copal 1 for the WA Device. But it seems that this shutter takes too many place to fit in the WA device.

Thanks for the pic's.

I've tried them all.

You have a choice between the Compur 0 and Copal 0.
I only have the Prontor Professional 01 and not the 01S shutter. Although from what I've read Prontor Professionals we're only made in 2 sizes 1 & 3, and the no.1 was adapted to fit size 0 lenses.

So you suggest I have to find another shutter?
For now, I've tried the lens on the MT and at infinity it sits just on the end of the inner rail, but it is nearly impossible to use the center filter. What I've not tried yet is moving the back a bit backwards, maybe then I can focus a litlle bit closer than infinity.

Or swap shutters if you have a Copal or Compur with another lens of a similar size and aperture scale.

Prontor's are excellent shutters but not the one for this arrangement.

I have an MT2000, and a 58xl on a copal 0 shutter. I never used any wide angle adapter - but used the back movements to focus with the lens all the way back (and yes, you need to drop the bed). I used the lens without any center filter, never saw the need for BW. I used the lens both for landscapes and architecture (see opening image on my website). Keep it simple.
