View Full Version : Fujinon SW S 90mm f8
Hi,
My Fujinon SW S 90mm f8 lens, which I just got, is in a Seiko shutter with the lettering on the inside of the front barrel. But I see bright green when it reflects regular light. Does this mean it's multi-coated? I only want to know because I like shooting into the sun.

With the inside lettering it'll be single coated but not too bad and worth a try. I'm sure there are some exceptions but there seems to be a dividing line with the Fujinons where inside lettering = single coated and outside lettering = multicoating.

My single coated fujinon has only yellow reflections. My multicoated fujinon has green and magenta reflections.
I don’t know if fujinon had an intermediate technology between their yellow single coating and the green-magenta EBC. Also I don’t know if it’s possible that a very late production inner ring writing lens got made at the beginning of the EBC era, but if you see both green and magenta I would guess that to be the case.
As far as shooting into the sun. I have had no problems doing that with my single coated fujinon. I have never encountered a situation where flare has ruined a shot. And if you find yourself in a situation where the flare could interfere it’s easy enough to hold something to block the sun. Or you could invest in a hood. I have one but I rarely use it.
The SW and SW S lenses (really the same lenses) were all single coated, but the coloring varies depending on the chemicals in the coatings. And having more than one color on a lens, does not mean it's multi-coated because one element may have a single coating that is amber, and another single coated element that is magenta. Other factors might be involved, such as the color of the incident light that is hitting the lens.
But it is always possible to run across an intermediate lens, for example, one between the SW (single coated) and NSW (EBC coated) -- with in-between features. Anything is possible.
Similarly, a lens with only one color does not mean that it is single coated. When an element is coated with more than one layer of the same chemical -- with different thicknesses -- only one color appears. This is common with EBC lenses.
And the Fujinon lenses that are EBC coated AND have the lettering inside the filter ring and also marked "EBC" inside the filter ring.

Yes... I do use a lens hood and bring a piece of cardboard with me to block the sun. Sometimes, I'm not sure, I'm getting lens flare either when I forget to block the sun, or I'm hoping not both. I was hoping to get a newer type lens like Fujinon because I figures it would have modern coatings on it. The glare I see is a very bright green, so I'm wondering if there was an intermediate phase with the Fujinon's. I'm almost guessing there was, however, because its very distinct. Not sure.
Can you send us a shot of this lens? It might be one of a kind. I've run across a few "outliers", like a 300mm lens with an 86mm filter thread instead of the listed 82mm thread.
