View Full Version : What is this structural framing for my sink called?

A friend built my sink stand years ago. I need to add a support cross-bar underneath the sink at the wash end, but I don't know how to look up this material. I would need a piece like the horizontal piece shown here, the edges of which are rolled inwards.

I have old angle iron supporting tables, but this, I believe is steel and is thinner, and painted or powder coated. I don't know how to look for it.
Thanks.

It's called "Unistrut" and comes in a huge variety of shapes, sizes and coatings.

Try https://unistrutstore.com/

I have no experience with this store, so YMMV, but at least it's a start.

Good luck!

The horizontal members are UniStrut and the vertical “legs” are Slotted Angle. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-1-4-in-x-96-in-Zinc-Plated-Slotted-Angle-800127/204325589

Warehouse suppliers, including Grainger outlets, carry actual Unistrut. Ordinary slotted steel is likely to rust rather easily in a damp darkroom, despite the nominal zinc plating, unless you paint it with epoxy. Factory powder-coated would be preferable. Any connector bolts, nuts, and washers should be stainless steel.

You won’t have a problem of rust in an air-conditioned house in Virginia, even in a damp darkroom. At least it hasn’t for me.

The stuff Lowe’s (in Leesburg) sells that looks like Unistrut is just as good as branded Unistrut, in my experience, and I have tested it for use with an overhead trolley hoist in my shop. It probably comes from the same factory.

What is "air conditioning"? We get it for free. It's called ocean fog; and here even teflon and toothpaste rusts!

I remember we had a "salt fog" chamber for testing coatings, it would destroy inferior coatings. I have a dehumidifier plugged in year round in my darkroom.

I'm kind of echoing what Paul said. Saw a massive pile of these supports at my elect. supply place (no idea what's called), so I also assume one could order various brackets/items that fit the system. The metal is bit off "yellow" (an alloy), but it looks quite stout & thick.....it should support quite a bit.

I'll check Lowe's; I looked the stuff up on line and experienced sticker-price shock. I know, long-term investment, but my wallet right now is short-term. I have a couple of pieces of shelf bracket that I may use instead, with some appropriate wedging. Not as strong, but probably sufficient.

Many large cities have architectural salvage outlets, where you can pick up old warehouse fixture components like Unistrut dirt cheap.

I think SuperStrut was the original product but it's fairly generic now. Electric and plumbing outlets have it along with all the mounts, L-brackets, clamps, spring loaded nuts and bolts you could ever want. Yellow or silver galvanized I have some exposed to salt air, it's fairly durable as is. Looks like you have the shallow channel, the deep version might be better for supporting a sink.

Thanks for the thought, Drew. While I like to joke about New York being part of Greater Purcellville, big cities are not convenient here. all I need is a single, 1.98-foot length (just shorter than the 2' stand exterior, which is why I may settle for the bracket-shelf U- channels, which I already have and can hacksaw.

Thanks. To be clear here:

My sink is well supported around the edges and underneath, with cross bars of Unistrut, on either side of the central drain. The washer will weight about 50 lbs full and will sit at one end when in use. I'm just choosing to add an additional cross bar under the sink about a foot from the end. The rep at the sink manufacturer, Delta, told me he has had similar inquiries over the years; that the sinks are designed to hold the weight of water if the sink is full; and that no one has ever reported one of their sinks breaking from a vertical print washer (many of which as Plexigas and much heavier than the Paterson).

I've seen those Delta sinks, and I know how heavy slot washers can get. Despite what they told you, you're wise to reinforce it from below.

You have the shallow Superstrut. The way it is oriented standard SuperStrut, which is deeper, would be stronger. A 10 foot length of 12 gauge Deep is $25 at Home Depot although they sell 2 and 4 foot pieces for a ridiculous prices.

Mal, thanks. I found the standard at Lowe's in a 2-ft piece for about $14. It is too deep for my placement, I would have to buy fittings in addition. and it's strength is far more than I need. I will test the actual weight, full, when I receive the washer, against my calculated est. of 50 lbs. and go from there.
