Besides picturesque sites, what photo institutions, educational, fine art galleries are recommended by forum users?

Thank you,

Raymond

If you have an interest in Hawaiian/Polynesian culture, the Bishop Museum is great. Not a tonne of photography, however.

+1 on the Bishop, it's in Honolulu.

On the Big Island, there are a few Historic sites run by the Park Service. Place of Refuge near Captain Cook, and a huge Heiau built by King Kamehameha in the NW part of the island are very nice with interesting insights into Hawaiian culture.

Good luck with galleries. Hawaii has had a number of notable photographers; but the worst photography I've ever seen in my life has been in expensive galleries on the Islands. Some awful paintings too.

Yes, some of it was pretty bad, so don't get your hopes up. This isn't the Ansel Adams Gallery.

Our time was limited last month at the Honolulu Museum of Art, so we only saw a portion. I would say worth a visit. Not sure there's much photography there, if any.

Looks as if Helmut had a bit of a problem with math.

There was a recent exhibit of wet plate work by Kenyatta Kelechi at the Honolulu Museum of Art.

As mentioned above, there's now a contemporary photography exhibit at the Downtown Art Center.

Film photography in general is alive and well in Hawaii, with most of the focus on street and wedding photography. There are a handful of LF photographers, and working darkrooms on Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island.

I entirely agree with the earlier comment about how many of the prints meant for tourists to buy are less than inspired.

There really should be a regular exhibition of some of Brett Weston's work on the island.

Most of the "less inspired" tourist-oriented photography venues on Maui totally burnt down during the catastrophic Lahaina fire.
