If you had a choice between a 180mm computar symetrigon in modern copal#1 of a linhof select schneider 210 f 3.5 in compound which would you choose. film format is 4X5 and 5X7

For 4x5, I find 210 more useful than 180. No comment on relative quality.

What's that Schneider lens? At f:3.5 it will be too large for a Compound #3, I guess it will be in a #4 shutter? If my lensboard could take it, I would prefer the big fast lens. Unless I were planning to carry it for any distance, in which case I would appreciate something smaller. If it's a Xenotar, coverage will be tight for 5x7". If it's a Xenar (or even a Xenar Typ D), coverage will be even tighter.

Which 210 is it? All things being equal, I personally prefer the 180mm size myself, for two reasons;

1) Almost everybody shoots 210, the 180 is just a wee bit different;

2) Many, perhaps most 180mm lenses are made to cover 5x7 with movements, not just 4x5. I know my Rodenstock 180mm has lots of movements for 4x5 shooting. As a result, I enjoy using it very much.

good luck
