Very interesting. It's the precursor to the drum scanner.

Very cool. Same principle used on movie film to make sound using Photosensitive tubes in projectors.

I read somewhere (decades ago) the famous photograph of the Hindenburg disaster was sent over Atlantic by telephone cable, now I know how! Fascinating.
