Hi, I am researching options to use b/w filters (yellow, orange, red) on the Schneider 210XL F5.6 Super Symmar lens.

I have been searching for 135mm filters and am not coming up with anything.

Any tips or ideas for using regular b/w filters for this massive front element?

Thank you,

Larry

I bought Lee SW150 filter system ND filters for my petzvals.
https://usa.leefiltersdirect.com/collections/150mm

Unfortunately Lee SW150 MKI holder I bought has the opening diameter 110mm.
So what I did was to put the Lee filter holder parts on the packard shutter.

You can ask S.K.Grimes to make a custom made filter holder of SW150 filters for you.
https://skgrimes.com/products/adapters/

If you plan to use the center filter VI, the front thread is even bigger M152x1, which requires the step-down ring with vignette around the edge to accept the custom holder for SW150.

Another solution would be to use the rear lens barrel thread, but that forces you to do the focus shift to adjust having the filter on the rear, which may interfere on the bellows with movements.

Hi, thank you for that excellent idea. I will investigate this.

There are 138mm round b/w filters available which could be attached via a step-up ring, which someone like SK Grimes could fabricate for you. IIRC these filters are oriented toward the pro cinema market and are expensive, but used copies could be attractive.

The cheapest option might be to tape the corners of a Cokin X-pro 130mm square filter to the front lens barrel with painters or gaffers tape. Easy enough to cut a 130mm square piece of cardboard to test if this would be workable. To my knowledge X-pro has been discontinued (a bunch were sold off at heavy discount years ago) but used filters should show up on the used market from time to time. The system supported a number of b/w filters.

Blutac 150mmx150mm filters to the lens. Simple.

What camera system are you using? I shoot Sinar and have the Schneider 210mm Super Angulon (I think the front element is almost the same size as the Super Symmar XL). I made a filter holder that holds a massive 6.6" square filter in front of the lens. That way it works with all of my lenses.

The one time I used a filter I put it on the backside of the lens. I think that side is 82mm. Focus after the filter is in place. ymmv

Larry, Linhof Studio recently custom ordered the filter holder to Lee.
This looks great!! I probably buy this kit with push on filters for SSXL150mm with IVa center filter.
For SSXL210mm, no need for push on ring!!
So this means the filter holder has 140mm hole diameter.

The LSL XXL Filter System

Whilst he Lee Filters SW150 holder provides a perfect solution for lenses with filter threads 105mm and smaller.
However , the LSL XXL filter holder is designed specifically for lenses where the filter thread / outside diameters are larger than 105mm.
The system works by different diameter donut rings that clamp to the outer diameter of the lens.
These rings are available in the following sizes:
90mm ( for most lenses with a filter thread of 86mm)
95mm
100mm ( for most lenses with a filter thread of 95mm
105mm (for 100mm filter thread - e.g.300mm Apo Sironar S)
110mm ( for most lenses with a filter thread of 105mm)
112mm,115mm,117mm,120mm &125mm
The 120mm donut also accepts the LEE SW150 threaded adapter rings for smaller sizes.

Lens compatibility examples. Please note that not all lenses are listed and care should be taken when measuring the outer diameter of your lens.

I use 72mm polarizing filter with the 210mm SSXL. You just screw it on the back element filter screw. Please remember to focus WITH filter, because filter behind the lens changes focus.
