This caught my attention and I found it intriguing, so I thought I'd share:

These were large format photographers and cameras given the time period

Didn't the Chinese invent aerial photography from a balloon?

Haha. The first aerial photographs were made by Nadar, in 1860s Paris. And wet plates, at that!

Plus, he invented airmail

"The Great Nadar" by Adam Begley is a fascinating read. Nadar was quite the character and endlessly inventive, and self-promoting. I think he would have loved today's social media.

Doesn't seem like large format is the best choice for Baboon photography, maybe if they are sleeping.

The nice thing about balloons is that they pop. ... some more dramatically than others (like the Hindenburg).

The fabled Cliff House in San Francisco had a collection of ULF prints circa post '06 Earth Quake.
I seem to recollect at least one of those was shot from a balloon.
I sure miss those Cliff House popovers.

Saw *Elvis* few years ago over ABQ. Ha ha ha, never seen him in Vegas (Hilton) when he was performing & I was there next door at Nellis. Don't mean to derail anything, but those days one could rent horses and check out various venues even one block from the strip. But, we progress.....

Hot air balloons also revolutionized geology.

Don't dismiss the threat of that, John. One never knows just exactly who those birds are working for.

He might just be my favorite photographer, and he had a great sense of humor.

Dead Horse Point overlook a guy had a bunch of helium filled balloons tied to a chair. He had a tank of Helium and would fill the balloons as he sat in the chair. Chair was tied with a climbing rope to the bumper of his jeep. As they filled he started rising and finally got airborne. He floated more than 100 feet out over the scene and sat there photographing for a bit. Then would cut the string on a balloon, one by one until he started to descend. Then pulled himself back over solid ground and landed.

An interesting way to get a different perspective.

Similar to when an airline pilot radioed the tower at LAX (Los Angeles International Airport) to report a guy in a lawn chair in the glide path of landing airplanes. Tower thought he was crazy and then more planes reported it. Seems the guy had attached a bunch of helium balloons to his chair and took a ride. Police helicopter got involved and ordered him down. He got down, had a BB rifle and would shoot a balloon at a time until he started descending. Was arrested when he made landfall. Don't know if he took any photos or even told his buddies when he started... "Hold my beer".

I once knew someone who acquired a 4x5 Aero Technika with I think a 250mm Sonnar for very, very little money when digital was replacing film. He would "hitch" rides in hot air balloons and shoot local scenes. He told me that he much preferred shooting from a hot air ballon verses from a plane or helicopter because he was never rushed to get a shot and loose 4x5 film holders in the basket of a hot air ballon were no problem to the pilot verses being a being a problem for the pilot of a helicopter.

Gosh, Willie, I am so glad my own visits to Deadhorse Point were made back before it became a theme park with DIY balloon rides. Wonder what would have happened if he tried that last week? An F16 might have speed by and popped his balloon.
