View Full Version : Linhof Kardan Color 8x10 has crossed my path
A Linhoff Kardan color 8x10 has crossed my path, and I have taken interest to acquire it, I had a quick look at it .
But what should I watch out for ????
Broken knobs, they are fragile
NO PARTS!
I have a couple
but there are a few variations the naming is poor
Here is my best

in the photo here yours has three ?? standards ??? modified lens board too.
At first glance knobs are ok, as for the bellows clean of cracks BUT pin holes ??? have to check !!
how tight should the knobs turn to stop movement ????
OHH!! how does the rear standard removes ??? to go horizontal...
Bellows can be fixed or replaced
The knobs are fragile, if they are the same shape as mine
The back rotates by pushing the corners
It also removes by pushing the corners chrome outward
Watch out, it can surprise
Post a pic here

There should be a push knob on the back of the rear standard that facilitate changing the orientation. I have a Linhof triplex Color Garden with four rails and the heavy duty tripod. The knobs should not be excessively tightened. Only as tight as they need to be to prevent the standard from moving. You can feel where it is enough. The Linhof design is incredible. How it encases the film holder upon insertion with that amazing bail bar so you just set it in there is amazing. They do not make cameras like this any longer. I had my Color Karen out yesterday. It is heavy as the dickers (as you already know), but it is a pleasure to work with. Enjoy.

This camera is built to perfection.
Look for bent / broken knobs which might happen on transportattion.
Weakest point is bellows, they are made for extreme movements but synthetic material prone to deterioration and not easy to fix. Bag bellows were made from leather and must be fine.
It’s easy to find reducing backs at least in Europe.
Go for it if weight dont bother you and if it comes with Linhof tripod.
Dedidated coffer is nice to have too.
thanks for the info !!!! to all !
I am still paying for it in installments so I do not have it with me .
And still have to find 8x10 film holders && a lens for it. I have one 30cm. but looking for a wide-angle.
I have the Linhof 4x5 Kardan GT since 1990.

Lensboards are very rare
That's why I made adapters
Wide angle requires a recessed lens board
My good bellows are leather
The camera I posted has a Packard shutter with sync in side behind the lensboard
Very excited to see pics of yours
Here is the 5X7 variation and I do have 4X5 capacity

Wonderful and massive! The Linhof Stativ tripod of the same era is highly recommended as it mates perfectly with the rail clamp. Light pressure on the knobs secures everything. They don’t make things like this anymore.
A question for the film holders of the 8x10 Kardan color ...??
what are the outer dimension sizes of the film holders -[8x10], I will need to D.I.Y. construction of one !
1000's of Thank you for any response.
Normal available world wide 8X10 Film holders have been the same for 100 years plus
Many documents online have bad Data
Buy them

Absolutely agree. The moulded part of the flap end of plastic holders that light seals the bottom of the holder works far better than the wooden holder limitations in this specific area. It obviously can be worked around, but why DIY when there is abundant inventory to acquire at good prices?
Looking around, here Athens very rare, seen some Japan after import and shipment coasts their up double the original price.
What I have read, on ebay-- prices start at 150,euros plus shipment + 50euros -- import taxes !!! THEN 65 euros per one, sooo... total 265 euros per one.
And it goes something like that. for now at least . I am still on it looking all around.

See why, D.I.Y.

BTW 18x24cm holders will fit 8x10 cameras, holders are same outer dimensions, 18x24cm film is slightly smaller than 8x10. Metric sized film you can get in European shops and around. Kodak 18x24cm Mammography film is very cheap compared to pan film
ok. sounds as a good starting point ! Kodak 18x24cm Mammography film I will look t it now !
just seen this on ebay
Zebra 8X10 Wet Plate Holder / Tintype, Ambrotype, Dry Plates / Large Format Photography / Film Photography / Black & White
any idea ?????
I know him

joho, you just learned how to remove whole back with ground glass inside.
If you don’t see it, it probably covered with metal ground glass cover.

My 8X10 did not have 8X10 GG cover
However I have 5X7 and 4X5 OE Linhof backs that have flip out viewing hoods
and a I have a true 5X7 back
All the above interchange in various manner
Additionally the backs and front have 2 holes to mount a shade or darkcloth
Very easy to bend a wire into the rare accessory
Can be used with dark cloth or any variation
The Calumet C1 came with similar
I made and sold a few here on the forum

Wanted to pass along a company that provided me with some support in a stiff Karden Color 8x10 rotating back. I reached out to www.laflexcamera.com and Austin responded with some technical assistance on how to properly remove my camera back and clean it and the synthetic lubricant to use (Super Lube). Back in the saddle as the advice was perfect and I found out my camera was manufactured in 1961.

I find if I run all pics through any pic editor they are then straight
No idea why, I just do it
Don't mess around with those fragil knobs, don't drop them
I take mine apart in chunks and lay them on a bed
gently
I have several OE bellows
They are exquisite and LN

Not a knob, but a hinge for tilt
The side you do not show should have a threaded lock knob
Be careful when unlocking it as the camera should be balanced on the 50mm rail

I have not yet learned the method to REMOVE these cursed knobs
When I gathered my pile, nobody wanted these cameras, German Museums have junk last I looked 10 years ago
Plastic dries out and fails
My even older tube radios do the same thing
We need a very old LINHOF repairman
I don't, as I have 3 complete cameras working fine
It seems you have enough now
Do you have a correct tripod and head?
I made a 90mm alu disc to fit LINHOF and use a very heavy duty Majestic head
More pics!
I have posted everything on this forum, but the forum takes a lot of human search
Is your goal collecting or usage?
Goal is usage.!
A broken tripod [058] multiblitz and no head. I am in the process of studying to make a wooden one [???] or tiring to find one linhoff like the one you have in the photo.

When you are inspecting the camera, there are a few things to keep in mind. Firstly, check the bellows for any light leaks. Shine a flashlight inside the camera with the bellows closed and look for any visible light coming through. Secondly, check the movements on the camera, including the front and rear standards, the lens board, and the rail system. Make sure that all movements are smooth and without any hitches. Thirdly, check the condition of the lens board and make sure it fits well onto the front standard. Fourthly, check the condition of the lens and the shutter. Lastly, check the condition of the ground glass and make sure it is clear and free of scratches.
If possible, ask the seller for a test shoot to see how the camera performs. Overall, the Linhoff Kardan color 8x10 is a great camera, but like any used camera, it's important to inspect it carefully to ensure that it's in good working condition.

hello Ron, went to the web page, there was no price for the tripod or for the camera ??
Yes, I have a couple standards with black knobs, no idea if early or late
The first prototype was very fancy with gimbal rail clamp standards
I spotted one used in a Fred Astaire Movie 'Funny Face' with Audrey Hepburn
It was mounted on a huge Saltzman Tripod
I just bought a new DVD of it for $6 delivered
Fun movie and fashion
