I dropped a brand new B&W 82mm yellow filter on the floor. The inner and outer rings came apart and incredibly the filter is undamaged. I pressed it all back together but the glass is now loose between the rings. Does this mean I need to press the rings together more firmly? Or should I put a tiny amount of some kind of adhesive in there?

A little bit of glue on the edge should do it. Just a little!

… or just let it be. A little looseness will not affect its functionality. But what a disappointing event.

Some filters have retaining rings that screw in to hold the glass. Does yours?

Of course it will effect the result. If the glass isn’t plane parallel to the image plane it will effect the result.

No, the inner ring snaps in. But it’s not really fitting very tightly. It’s staying together but seems like it could easily come apart again

Yes Doremus, it is threaded. Took stronger light to see it. I’ve screwed it back together and the glass is no longer loose. I’d like to screw it in a little tighter to make sure it’s secure but gripping it is difficult.

With filters like yours, I have put the smallest dab/dot of hot glue on the ring to keep it from unscrewing. Hot glue is of course very easy to remove, if need be. I had one filter that seemed to always unscrew for whatever reason... After applying a "dot" of hot glue, it has never loosened up since then.
