I am happy to say that Photo-Eye has finally picked up my new book, "Shelter from the Storm". It is listed for sale in their latest email newsletter that came today.

Which is the best way to purchase the book so that the profits benefit you or the publisher more than the merchant?

Frank,

As you know. You don't do these books for the money. Standard royalties are 15% of wholesale price. Mine is less because I took a chunk up front to finance my printing of the exhibit. All methods except directly from me pay me the same poor cut. The cheapest retail being Amazon. The most profiable to me is me direct, signed copies via email/PayPal from my website www.gittingsphoto.com because I get the retail markup plus my meager royalties.

Thanks all for the interest.

You'll make it up with strong sales in Nigeria. Congratulations.

By the way Photo-Eye is a first rate organization. They contribute alot to the community here. Don't hesitate to buy from them.

70% of the book i have ordered from them have been out of stock, and taken minimum of 3 months to get to spain. i hope i am just a one off, but the third consecutive time it happened i gave up.

Do I see a photo or two from the Acoma Pueblo in the intro slide show?

John,

No there is nothing from Acoma, but there are many from Chaco Canyon, which was a related and contemporaneous culture.

Kirk,

I do not recommend Photo-eye. I've had nothing but double-talk and failed communication from D. Himes and the others who run that bookstore. Other bookshops have been much more responsive and honest. From a publisher's point of view, Photo-eye is not a business that deserves special mention.

Sorry to hear about peoples experiences with them buying books. I personally have no experience with that aspect of their business. I was refering to the role they play in the photo community here in NM in general which is very positive.

I can vouch for Rixon Reed being a good guy and honest member of the photo community. I doubt anything that's being perceived as sketchiness is deliberate. I have heard that they're understaffed and overextended, and have been for quite some time. Last I heard, Rixon lost a manager and was now trying to run both the bookstore and the gallery by himself. If he's been dropping the ball, I'm sure he's not happy with the situation either, and that he'll fix it when he figures out how.
