I was thinking maybe I don't flood the relevant threads so I'll dedicate this one to photos from my cross-country road trip, at least the 35mm and 120 here.

I shot about 50 rolls of 35mm and 120 so I have lots of work to do. I developed 5 rolls this evening and here's the first one hot off the scanner.

...Another from Zabriskie, I think I like this one better...

Me too. I've found that, unless one happens to be in DV when some frontal activity is churning things up, the "air" (here in California I rate it just like peanut butter, namely, creamy, crunchy, etc.) makes images that include distant objects and sky look bad. Especially in black and white. Leaving out the sky helps avoid accentuating the "haze." You had better luck with that viewpoint than I did. My similar framing included so much muck that even the skyless version didn't work.

Corran
27-Jun-2022, 08:54
Thanks y'all! And yes, I definitely started to compose w/o sky that morning. Glad I brought my 150mm, almost didn't. Sometimes I like a hazy blue sky with pastel colors, so I'll see how the color film came out when I finally get there, probably in a week or two.

That driftwood was sweet, here's another angle, after I climbed up a rock:

...so interesting to see the same subject from different vantage points - with the second image seeming, to me, a bit more dynamic...like a creature crawling/struggling out from under the rocks. I like them both about equally.

Edit - ps: your Chinatown photo must've popped up before I posted my above comment. Wow - lots going on in that image...a shrink would have a field day I think!

John - yes! More motion/dynamism in the second image is what I was going for.

I can never resist a good shop window self-portrait. The small area of darkness I could see my reflection in drew me.

Thanks Dugan!

Thanks tuco! Yes it was a bit crazy. I calculated my stats:

7567.3 miles driven
193.98 gallons of gas used
$5.30 average price per gallon
39.01 miles per gallon average

Here's something from Yosemite's Tunnel View. And it might need a bit of explanation! Yosemite to me was/is a mecca, and I knew many of the locales from famous pictures. I also knew I likely wouldn't be breaking any ground with my images from there. I would characterize my feelings towards Yosemite as "romantic." I specifically bought some soft-focus filters for this trip, wanting to "romanticize" the view. Here is one of them:

Hasselblad 503cx / 80mm / Tiffen Pro-Mist 3

I'm glad I held onto my prius. Not as much storage capacity as an SUV, but for times like these with (California) gas prices, I'm glad I've held onto it.

Looks like you've had a great trip, thanks for sharing your shots from along the way :)

Oh yeah, so I mentioned my slow leak that I got patched. On the last day driving back I had one more unfortunate event. A minivan about 5-6 car lengths ahead of me I guess hit a rock just right and it shot out behind and diagonal at incredible speed, and whacked my windshield in mere milliseconds. Put a tennis ball-sized spiderweb of cracks in the windshield - total loss. Definitely pissed on that one. I think they saw it happen because they gunned it and rocketed away to make sure I couldn't get their plate, though I don't think I could actually do much with it. Ultimately it was an accident. Will have to talk to my insurance, but I'm thinking I'm just going to have to bite the bullet on a replacement which will likely be about the cost of my deductible.

Alan Klein

Often, the deductible doesn't affect windshield replacement. Check with your broker. Great shots and a great trip. Congrats. Waiting to see more. I like the Kubriske Point shot.

We'll see, they usually fix little nicks from hits but I'm not so sure on the whole thing.

Anyway, I'm back with more images. Each night I'm developing 5 rolls of film in a big tank and then I use the remaining pyrocat to semi-stand develop a batch of 4x5. Just bought some more as I'm almost out.

Here's a gorgeous tree found in the Redwood National Park, just behind "The Big Tree." Hasselblad + 40mm and R25:

Sneaker Wave

Hasselblad / 40mm / R25

I got pretty wet from this one :). I was waiting for the wave to crash onto the rock, which was making some nice spray, when I saw a good wave coming and clicked the shutter. It was a bigger wave than I thought and hit just the right angle...

John Layton
2-Jul-2022, 05:09
Yes...with the "objects are closer than they appear" 40mm, you'd be getting wet for sure! Did you wipe off your gear with a damp cloth soon afterwards?

In my own work with ocean waves I get soaked quite often...usually while I'm under the dark cloth!

At any rate, I love the excitement of your "sneaker wave," plus how perfectly the spray pattern fills the upper left of the square perfectly, and how that gentle curve of the sand and rock on the lower right helps to "ground" the image somewhat. Interesting when I scroll the image down so that the sand and rock feature disappears - at which point its all about that spray and its a bit much...so I do like how that foreground feature works here.

Also...how well you work the square (another sad reminder that I sometimes really miss my 'Blads!). Finally, another reminder to me, given that I tend to gravitate to long(ish) exposures for my wave photos...to try speeding things up once in a while!

Thanks John for your thoughts. I was playing around with cropping but as you've alluded it seems like the full square works. I've made a few prints from my square images so I think this one will be going in the docket for sure. I need to get some larger square mats too...I'd like to do this one 20x20 I think.

And yes I did wipe down the lens a bit later when I had some fresh water handy. Not too much though. Hopefully I won't need to get a service from this shot! Luckily I did have my handy R25 filter on as usual so avoided any salt water in the glass and crevices around there.

Speaking of cropping, I envisioned this image 4:5 and it worked as intended. However I shot a color image as well and I will be eager to see once I get there, on Portra 160 or Gold 200, can't remember.

There's nothing like a sneaker wave to teach you to bring along a bottle of distilled water and clean soft microfiber cloths when planning an ocean shoot. Salt water is also terrible for leather boots. But good timing!

Corran
2-Jul-2022, 17:59
Thanks. It was certainly interesting. We don't get those over on this coast, as far as I'm aware.

Actually, while I saw a ton of signs about sneakers while at various coastlines, this was one of the first places I stopped and I didn't actually know about sneakers! So I was extra surprised.

Here's a shot that came out really nicely I think. This is from the Spring Ranch Nature Preserve, just north of where I had stayed overnight at the Van Damme State Park campground. I drove by at first and thought it was private property but turned around to investigate. It was a gorgeous morning after an early-morning hike at Van Damme and I am really glad I turned around.

I would have thought by now you would have gotten your hands on a good mat cutter Bryan. I might be talked into parting with mine, havent used it in ages and really dont have a good place to set it up.

Corran
3-Jul-2022, 08:13
Gary, I really hate cutting mats, which is the main reason I don't have one! Also, the company I've worked with for the past couple of years can do exact custom mats to my measurements and the prices are about the same as buying the mat board itself, so the cuts only cost me a few cents. That being said, I also have to order in bulk, and I really have been meaning to get a mat cutter for one-off customs. So let me know what you have and what it might cost! I am also in a new/additional gallery space and they do custom framing - I've been told I can request anything from them as needed and get it at cost, but they are a couple of states away.

Randy - a full R66 trip is definitely something I'd like to do - that was a highlight of my trip! But I only did Oklahoma City to about Albuquerque before breaking off and heading southwest towards Phoenix.

From the very accurately-named "Stonefield Beach" in Oregon. To me this looked like a drone/aerial view of the beaches in CA/OR with a big haystack, rather than just a small tableau near the edge of the water. Perhaps I will title "The Mini-Haystack" :).

I looked my cutter up. You probably wouldnt want to pay what its worth. Dick Blick has them on sale for $550, Amazon lists it for $750 and regular price is over a thousand. Wife thinks I should hang on to it.

I hope I never see Phoenix again

Hot!

I lived there for a while, often 'down by the river' before the city got too big

Since the 60's I made a point of using backroads, old motel, hotel, real food

Stop for gas at the smallest pump still open and talk

One of my favorite old river hotels, still ran a Cat House

as in, 'do you want a cat with that room'

I declined an actual cat for the night

They had a dozen in a window, I never saw them move

Iowa side of the river

Really good food in a big dining room

Bryan. How do you keep track of all the different films you use and not screw up something while exposing them?

Corran
6-Jul-2022, 20:11
I brought 3 backs for my Hasselblad. One was marked for b&w film and I only used Delta 100, or, HP5+ when I was hand-holding in the city. Since I was shooting so much film, there was no time to forget which b&w film I had loaded. I only shot 4 rolls of HP5+, but 16 or so rolls of Delta 100. The second was for color film. I shot 4 rolls of Kodak Gold 200 then one roll of Portra 160. The final film back was exclusively for infrared film, which I shot 3 rolls of and haven't developed.

For my 35mm I only shot T-Max 100 in my F3. In my Widelux I only shot Tri-X except one roll of T-Max 100 which got ruined when the back popped off accidentally...might recover a few images but haven't developed that. I also shot a couple rolls in my F2 at night with Tri-X. Anyway it was pretty easy to keep track of since the films were dedicated to each camera. Oh, the rolls were bulk-rolled and I have 2 bulk roll types, all black and a white-labeled can. Black cans are ALWAYS T-Max 100 (I've done that for years) and the white-labeled cans were Tri-X (and I can write on the label if needed).

4x5 film, where to start...all the Grafmatics were T-Max 100, easy. I had 20 or 30 normal film holders and I wrote either "Portra," "E6 (Velvia)", or "Efke" on them, and then had some additional unmarked ones that were all additional T-Max 100 if needed. All Portra in 4x5 was 400 speed. I had a 4x5 film holder bag attached to my backpack with one Grafmatic and two each of the other 3 films, and replenished as needed. See this for the bag I carried the 4x5 film in (https://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?168805-Large-4x5-film-holder-case).

So yes I had a lot of films but kept them fairly well marked and organized. I hope that convoluted system makes sense haha :).

One of the most amazing sunrises I've ever seen. This was about 5:30am, driving on Tioga Pass Rd. going to Yosemite NP on June 12th. I had to stop and shoot this, but Yosemite requires reservations if you want to enter the park after 6am and I was running late due to my car tire being deflated that morning. So after popping off two frames (bracketing) I booked it to the entrance gate and got there at like 5:55 (I did not have a reservation!). If I would've had more time I might've broken out the 4x5 and shot a sheet of Velvia but this came out pretty well!

I still have 4x5 holders with Provia, Velvia 50, Tmax 100 and Tmax 400 and Ektachrome. I use a little self-stick tag on each holder. Frankly, I'm nuts doing this. I have to simplify with just a couple of films. My brain hurts. Age I suppose.

That's a great shot. Thirty-some odd years ago I was driving in the same place on Tioga coming in from the east like you and Mono Lake. My girlfriend (now wife) and I had just filled up the gas tank. I think we were at 12,000 feet when the rental started to sputter and the car couldn't get any higher. I was sorry I didn't put in high test gas, just regular. Anyway, we finally got the car started and once over the top, the engine worked fine coming down the "hill". I caught the Half Dome with a similar shot only from sunset. I was shooting a Mamiya RB67 medium format with Agfa Optima film.

I place each 4x5 and 8x10 holder in a ziplock bag. Even thought I usually shoot only 1 film type at a time, always BW, I place a small piece of paper in each bag identifying that the film. After exposure I put the exposure record inside the bag with the holder.

Alan, there are no road passes in CA over 10,000. There are in Colorado. We do have many foot passes considerably higher. The highest peak visible from the Tioga Pass Rd is Mt Dana, slightly over 12,000 and not quite visible in the posted picture. The highest peak in Yosemite NP is Mt Lyell, slightly over 13,000. It's really south of Yosemite NP that the range trends still higher. The highest gravel road accessible to passenger cars in CA is about 11,000 ft into the Bristlecone Pine preserve.

I thought it was 12,000. But you're right. It actually was 9,945 ft. In any case, my rental car just couldn't handle it very well.

So the cameras I used on this trip were:

35mm film:
Leica M6 with 7.5mm fisheye 15mm 25mm 35mm 50mm
Nikon F2 and Nikon F3 with 8mm and 16mm fisheyes, 15mm, 25-50mm, 80-200mm
Widelux F7

120 film:
Hasselblad 503cx with 40mm 80mm 150mm
Noblex 150U
Horseman 6x12 back for 4x5

4x5 film:
Shen-Hao with 58mm 90mm 150mm 240mm 8 3/4 Verito

I also had some other cameras for backup that I didn't use, like my Speed Graphic and 3D-printed ultrawide camera. Oh and I did pack my D800 digital for night/star images but never used it (I needed to sleep, at some point :)).

I generally chose one size of film for a given location. 35mm was just for quick casual shots and for shots in big cities, the Hasselblad for a lot of places where I didn't know what I was looking for but it looked like an interesting landscape, and 4x5 for the places I knew should have some good images and I wanted to really focus on getting photographs there. Sometimes I shot a little on one or the other camera and then went back to my car to get something different. I think I could generally be happy with the Hasselblad for most any location, hence the # of shots I took with it.

As an aside, these guys were popping up and running around all over the place. A big family came while I was photographing and scared them all away, but when they left this one popped up and was checking out if the coast was clear. I very slowly got closer and carefully lowered my tripod to get this framed up, expecting him to scamper off, but he posed just long enough for me to fire off one frame at I think 1/4 of a second. I tried to get a little closer but he finally had had enough and ducked into his hole.

I've seen this photo of the cabin and mountains a hundred times but never with a squirrel. Good catch. None of that ordinary stuff we always see.

While we're on our Moultan barn wildlife photos, here's one I got years ago with a buffalo sticking his head out from the right side of the barn.

This was from a Toyo 4x5 I don't remember the lens but I do remember how funny it was to watch about ten other photographers show up after I had my 4x5 set up and was having coffee on the tailgate of my truck. They saw where my camera was and thought that must be the place to get the photo from and lined up on each side of me, leaving about 10 feet as not to crowd me.

I have to admit that when I was in the area with my 8x10, I did not go to the barn. I already have hundreds of negatives I'll never print (of which some are barns)...

The peeking buffalo is fun! I saw a couple of wild buffalos near the road, trotting along, which was interesting.

When I drove up to the barn, no one was around. I grabbed my camera and by the time I had setup and started making some images a ton of folks had driven up and parked, and the family I mentioned earlier actually all crowded around just in front of where I was setup to take selfies! At least they left fairly quickly.

I know the barn is pretty overdone but I always look for interesting or unusual items around the area, a different perspective, and other ways to make images that reflect my personal style and ideas (since I know you're reading RL, if you'd like to make comments you can feel free to email me directly).

I would definitely like to spend some more times in the Tetons. I didn't have the energy to do a whole lot. I'd like to see some of the lakes. And also go to Yellowstone of course!

Old barn images are hard to pass up. Growing up on the left coast, anything with a bit of age draws our attention. While at university, I lived in a building built in 1885, hand-forged nails and all. I thought it was pretty old at the time. Going to my son's graduation, I was driving from Mass. to Ithica, NY just before the leaves came out, I saw more old barns, crumbling road houses, and such than I have in my life in the west. And I have not been to Europe.

But the gopher or ground squirrel does make the image. I might print this 11x14 negative some day in Pt/pd. It has a nice lizard up in the window. The first, or more likely, the second oldest national park building in Zion NP (bathroom in an old campground). Angels Landing in the back.

Last night I developed the last 4 rolls of film from my trip. All that's left is a few sheets of Velvia I need to develop but I need to get fresh E6 chems.

I posted this scene from the Redwood NP way back on the first page, which just so happened to be in the first batch of film I developed. But, these last rolls I developed were Rollei 400IR film, and this image with the lighter foliage from the IR looks nice and I might need to print this one instead. It's closer to what I was envisioning. 40mm + R25 filter:

I got pretty wet from this one :). I was waiting for the wave to crash onto the rock, which was making some nice spray, when I saw a good wave coming and clicked the shutter. It was a bigger wave than I thought and hit just the right angle...

Perfect!

I stand corrected!

Vaughn and I walked past this fire house in Blue Lake, and had a discussion about letters and symbols with ambiguous meaning. I like photographs like this with potentially an unknown meaning to the viewer.

Great stuff Brian.

I have some Efke IR that I've kept frozen since I bought it, when the discontinuance was announced. I know IR isn't supposed to keep well but people were posting HIE images years after it had gone away. I need to try that Efke soon as I can get the darkroom up and running again. Of course I can always buy fresh Rollei.

Definitely a Fire House

Great, Bryan! A balanced fire department.

Volunteer -- complete with air-raid rated siren to call the volunteers. Even with cells phones, the Fire Chief loves it. It lets the town know there's trucks soon to be on the road and they are doing their job. A friend whose house is next to the siren disagrees.

And we have the World Famous Logger Bar...which also happens to be my nextdoor neighbor. Took Bryan in there too.

25 cent pool (good table) and free pool on Mondays. Good dart boards (a bit tight).

I also bought some Efke IR around that time. I shot a little and then didn't really know what to do with it so froze it. A few years ago I took it out and shot some in Florida, but it had little sparkles of light (cosmic radiation??) all over the negative. Hope yours fared better.

Vaughn, the shot of the bar in the snow looks like a classic painting!

Hm. Well I've waited this long; I'll probably wait until my darkroom is complete and give it a go.

I'm starting to look at some of my earlier scans with fresh eyes, since basically all my film short of a few E6 sheets are developed. I've been printing and this past weekend showed some work from this trip. Sold a couple prints even.

Here's a somewhat abstract image on the beach somewhere in CA, cropped 4:5 as I envisioned it while shooting:

Thanks Randy.

When I was in San Francisco, I toured Chinatown all morning, and then in the afternoon I walked all the way to Fort Point under the Golden Gate Bridge, seeing whatever I came across along the way - and then walked all the way back through the Presidio before catching a bus to Caltrain. According to my phone I did over 36,000 steps when the day was done, or likely about 12 miles or so. Underneath the GG Bridge were some surfers (I guess you'd call them?) using "eFoil" boards (https://liftfoils.com/products/lift3). I think this was my favorite photograph from the GG area with the minuscule surfer giving some scale to the image:

There was a band playing that night. Someone shouted that it was snowing and everyone went out and left the band playing mid-song. We don't get much snow in these parts (elevation 80').
