This was shot outdoors at an exhibition at the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. I cycled thru first with an F6 w/micro Nikkor 105mm f4 and then with the Pentax. The Pentax produced the best images. Tripods are not allowed inside the conservatory but are allowed outside. This is one of several "keepers" I got that day.

First test roll of hand spooled 1992 vintage 70mm Kodak 400 Tri-X Professional Unperfed film. Rated at EI 400, extremely dark stormy rainy day on my back deck. Camera was Plaubel Makiflex Standard, lens is Bausch and Lomb Super Cinephor 159.1mm F2.0. A movie theatre projection lens intended for projecting 35mm and 70mm movie film in cinema houses. Film back is Graflex RH-50 18 shots bulk loaded. Film processed in D23 1:1 12 minutes at 74F in single reel Paterson dev tank. RC 8x10 print Arista #2 Matte developed in Multigrade. Omega DII laser aligned 180mm black Rodagon lens. Camera was handheld at the Makiflex Standard's top speed of 1/125. I really like the "look" I am getting with this extremely unusual lens. It's quite a heavy rig so I get a gym workout to boot. I am really diggin' all this 70mm stuff at this point. 18 6x7 exposures fits into two Vue-All 70mm pages when cut into threes.

Lovely image, and very interesting use of selective focus. Only three of the eight flowers is in focus, and nothing else, but it is amazing how you direct our eyes to the flowers in focus, and our eyes just keep coming back to those three flowers. What f/stop did you use with the 180 Sonnar?
I have not shot any film in quite a long time but this image makes me want to pull out my Fuji GX680 and try a few images with selective focus!

Thank you, Sandy.
The image was shot wide-open at f/4.
I focused on the stamen of the tulip in focus.
I can get 'sharpness sickness' similar to motion sickness ;) after working a busy razer-sharp digital work week.
My fix is to shoot for selective focus and let the bokeh fall where it will with my favorite film cameras.
It is self-medication therapy for me. When I shoot it, I am totally in I don't care about sharpness mode.
It sounds like it is time for you to enjoy some film!
Kind regards,
Darr

Kodak Aerographic Plus-X 2402 type II perfed, developed in Paterson five reel tank with custom twin 70mm reels. D23 1:1 12 minutes at 73F produces a beefy negative easy to print. 8x10 Arista #2 RC developed in Multigrade. Omega DII laser aligned 180mm black Rodagon, I like using the Makiflexes in the studio with my olde Broncolor strobes. Classic Kelly lighting. Depth of field is extremely limited in this setup, but the central buds of the flowers are sharp near the center of the print. This olde film has a softness that I like. Looks vintage and now retro

I exposed a few roles of film but did not come up with anything in B&W to rival Darr's use of selective focus.
I also experimented with a soft-focus lens with a Fuji GFX 50S, with the subject being what was left of a lily after it dried up and partially disintegrated. For this shot I used a Pentax 67 soft focus lens and a short extension tube. The soft focus lens that I used (120mm f/3.5) is an old design apparently similar to an early 19th century lens. The lens is very sharp at f/11, but has nice soft focus from f/3.5 to f/8. I made the attached shot at f/5.6, and then enhanced the image in PS.

Thanks, & yes, they are such a great flower. It's not surprising that people like John Blakemore were obsessed with them.
We had some pretty fine camellias in the front garden not too far from the tulips, until about 2 years ago, then they suddenly died a death. They were lovely for photo studies too.
There's something about the Zeiss 50's 'variable soft focus' quality between 1.4 and 2.8 that really works nicely with flowers.

An even older photo, now 20 years old. I think this one was on a Canon 10D with a Sigma 12-24 at 24 that I seem to recall having bought on that trip, visiting the store where I bought most of my LF stuff in the late 80’s when I lived there.
