CineStill is releasing a new color 400 speed film. I didn't see any posts about it on LFF, I hope this is the right place for this.

It is in 35mm, 120 and 4x5. They are having a "Film Maker Campaign"

You can check it out here:

This is the right place -- and thanks for posting this.

But $4 a sheet? I can get Ektar 100 for half that. I'm glad my freezer is full.

Ektar 100 in 4x5 is $5.50 a sheet at B&H. Where do you get it for $2?

Seek and ye shall find.

When was the last time you got some at this price and is it an official distribution channel, or someone discounting an old inventory that will deplete at some stage.

I could be wrong but I don't see official distributors able to sell Ektar 100 at the price you claim.

All film "depletes", but I'm still using Ektar 25 that's 30 years old and frozen since birth. As good as new.

25-Mar-2022, 07:49
By depleting I am referring the seller inventory you are referring to. You don't really answer my question. When was the last time you got some Ektar at this price and if recent, is it through an official distribution channel?

I am not sure what your angle is to come post such comments when people try to support the availability of LF film for the community.

I don't have an angle, as you suggest. I thanked the poster for mentioning this film. Some people may want to buy it. That's great with me. I don't want to buy it. That's great with me, too.

I'm in for 25 sheets of 4x5.
They're 90% of the way....
It will be nice to have an option for 4x5 "400-speed" color neg film besides Portra 400.

Cinestill sells cine film without Remjet to use as photo film. Cine film is made in 35 mm rolls, not in sheets.

What do backers get from contributing? Are there levels of amounts to giving and what you get back?

@Alan Klein,

Essentially it's just pre-orders. They had a bunch of different levels, ranging from 10 rolls of 35mm all the way up to hundreds of sheets of 4x5. I backed $150 for 25 4x5 sheets. I also did anther $100 for 10 rolls in 120.

They have 35mm, 120 and now 4x5.

From the CineStill page.

Q: Is 400D a new film?
A: Yes, 400D is a new film CineStill has been developing for years with our manufacturing partners around the world.

Q: Does 400D have rem-jet?
A: No, but it does feature a process-surviving anti-static lubricant coating that makes it a great film for both manual and automatic-winding cameras.

Q: Is 400D a repackaged motion picture stock without rem-jet?
A: No.

Q: What film is 400D based on?
A: CineStill 400D is specifically designed for still photography. We worked exclusively with our manufacturing partners around the world to roll components found in many different films into one. This new film is based on advanced technology found in motion picture emulsions, and at the same time delivers features exclusive to still photography materials in both unexposed and processed states.

Well you get these extras:
• CineStill Film Maker enamel pin
• CineStill Film Maker embroidered patch
• Unlocks FILM MAKER Benefits

My photo hat has some pins on it, so I will add one more :)

They are now seeking pre-orders for 220 film.
They're 87% of the way there.
I'm in for 5 rolls.

They gave up on 220 at 92%...

I just received a nice, professional email from Cinestill.
They're hoping to get the 4x5 400D film out this month.
It looks like they've given up on 220 for the short term, so backers of the 220 effort will be receiving twice as many rolls of 120 as substitution.

I emailed Cinestill, inquiring about an ETA for the 400D film in 4x5.
I received a response saying they are in the final stages of packaging, and the film should be shipped in early March.

The problem with Cinestil 400D is that it's a motion picture film and Cinestil washes the anti-halo layer to make it a C-41 suitable film. Without anit-halo layer, Cinestil 400D is not good at highlights, washing them (almost black in the negative) and to get a good result you need a hard work with the scanner.

I'm just happy ANYONE is making new film in 2023! Cinestill has done a lot to help keep film, not only alive, but growing (others too, such as Lomography). I really enjoyed the 800T, if you embrace the "bloom". I've used their C41 chemistry for almost 2 years now without issue. The development of their B&W Monobath was a big reason I started shooting B&W, just its simplicity. Happy to see they are putting it out in 4x5.

Well, "early March" has now become mid-March.

Cinestill is taking Kodak Vision 3 motion picture stock and removing the remjet layer with 400D being Vision 3 250D.

Yeah that makes sense , is the 4x5 an off brand kodak that they just repackage?

Marketing statements aside, I just want them to get the film base right this time in 4x5 version of 400D. Years ago I had the chance to play with "800T" in 4x5 sheets and the only film stock thinner than that was aerial roll film.

Actually if you are a backer and ask them for an update by mail, they will answer you. It looks like they hope to fulfill order end of June or beginning of July.

I can understand there is little value to advertise they are waiting for their partner who does the finishing of the product. It sounds very much like they need to fit the partner’s schedule and don’t have much bargaining power for the terms they got.

I guess we can all understand large format is not a priority at the volume it is ordered. Hopefully they get more accurate scheduling in the future.

The film will probably be outdated by the time we receive it.

Cinestill dropped an email update this evening:

IT’S HERE! Yes, you read that right: 400D IN 4X5 IS FINALLY HERE!

First, we’d like to thank all of you for your patience. We’ve had to overcome many obstacles to make 400D in 4x5 a reality, and we wanted to ensure that our first batch met the level of quality that is worthy of the format and represented our brand well. We believe this has. And our team is so excited to get this film into your hands (and cameras!).

Fulfillment of the 4x5 backer orders has already begun and will continue over the next few weeks. If you’ve moved since our last update, please email us at support@cinestillfilm.com with your updated shipping address as soon as possible. When your order has shipped, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with a tracking number.

Once again, THANK YOU for contributing to our 400D campaign and making 4x5 a reality! We’re looking forward to seeing the amazing pictures you will create with it. Once all backers have been shipped to, we plan to offer this film for regular retail sale. As campaign backers, you’ll be the first ones notified of its availability for sale in case you want to purchase additional film. More on that soon…

But until then, happy shooting! Please do feel free to email us, message us, and DM us your results. We can’t wait to see what you create with this film!

Yours in Analog,

the CineStill Team
