I offered to help a friend align his Beseler 45MX enlarger. He'd been told by someone else that it needs a part that's no longer available (I know this is vague ... but it's all i have to go on right now). does anyone know of a source for parts?

thanks,
p

Have you asked Beseler themselves?

Do you mean the device to help align? It's basically a metal rod with a level bubble at the end. Zig-A-Line I think. Not cheap. There's also a device that projects a target from the neg stage to a front silvered mirror on the base board. Also not cheap.

Aligning can be done without either one. Put a large (8x10" ??) piece of glass in the neg holder area and measure all around so that the glass is exactly the same distance from the base board. Then do the same to the lens stage. Adjusting screws are on the head.

No need to agonize over absolute perfection.

Maybe this will help in figuring out what's needed:

thanks everyone. i forwarded all the info to my friend. the person who told him parts weren't available might have been an unscrupulous technician.

What model Beseler does he have? Beseler made a change midstream in its manufacture of the MXT that made lens stage alignment easier. I assume no Beseler had that until the MXT and then only the relatively later MXTs (around 1994 forward). Maybe that's what your friend was told.
