Why does this only work with the cameraenlarger mounted on a North wall?

Same reason painter studios like north-facing windows. No direct sun. More natural "white" light, not too warm (orangey). Or maybe that's where his room is? :)

Only? It may work BEST with consistent diffused northern light. As shown, the mercury vapor lamp would provide very uneven light.

Perhaps the lamp is new experiment

The north window may be first effort

No, you turn the lamp on to see if it is sunny outside;-)

I've seen similar diagrams like this referencing a solar enlarger setup for Carbon Prints of all things. The conventional wisdom today is that it's impossible to enlarge alternate process prints, but they found a way back then apparently.

There are now some UV enlarger projects underway showing success :)

Blast from the past. What if the horse that draws your buggy decides to stand in front of the window?

The easel structure reminds me of those retractable basketball nets in gyms :D

I almost bought a used overhead spring loaded lighting fixture that bolted to a ceiling from a member here

I settled for 4 used wall booms for $80 Manfrotto Wall Booms (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546663-REG/Manfrotto_098B_098B_Wall_Mounting_Boom.html)

I gave 2 away to a member

Very handy in studio

again analog studios closing 2011

I guess if it were vertical, rain and snow could collect on the window, affecting exposure times....
Either way Drew would not approve...it is not a well regulated light source....

In my crazy mind I once thought about using a skylight with a camera/box mounted to the ceiling and then an adjustable table below it. And then I wonder what Weston used in his villa in 1923 Mexico .

Not crazy, it was an early KODAK Technology

Directed Light

Just found on my scanner the undated KODAK Camera Catalog that the Hang It came from

Reading more shows innovation and progress in enlarging

Using a hole/window in a North is depicted

The booklet is stamped with Bowman Drug Co Oakland CA here is that location

Hangings in the darkroom, using a guillotine cutter in the dark ... are we talking about photography or medieval modes of capital punishment?
