So what do I do with this metal piece with a bit of velvet cloth attached to it?

You really should put it back as this is a light seal.

Goes under the center bit with the “patent info 4x5 printing “ not in the end. But, I have not had one of these apart in a really long time. I would carefully remove the two screws on each side and pull the two halves apart. Then maybe you can see better what’s what. Nothing to loose.

It's been quite awhile since I've disassembled a Grafmatic, but that piece looks like the felt light seal that sits under the septum tray where it slides in/out. Kind of hard to explain here. If you PM your email address, I can send along a service manual which should help you fix it.

I tried shoving it back under the whole septum tray. It closes and cycles alright but sometimes it slides back out and will jam.

I wonder if it's not supposed to be glued down or something. Anyways thanks for the ideas and resources. Will try not being lazy and take it apart when i have a moment.
