Hello,
I've got this Goerz Dagor Series III No.3 with f/6.8 and a focal length of 8 1/4".
Because the focal length is given in inch and it is inscribed with "Goerz Dagor" only - not Goerz Berlin or C. P. Goerz - I guess it was made for the US market by the original Goerz (maybe US fab).
The serial number 222830 seams to pe WWI (1905 - 1910).
Might this be correct?
What is the angle of view? I've read 72° (90° at f/32) but I'm unsure if this is correct...
best regards,
Oliver

Read it to the end.

Also see http://www.largeformatphotography.info/classic-experts.html I’m not at all sure that the serial numbers here are dated correctly or even make sense.

Made in the US. Goerz set up a US subsidiary Goerz American Optical Company that went its own way as an independent company during WWI and survived until the 1960s. No connection with American Optical Company of Springfield, Ma.

The lens looks original to the shutter; not sure but was the rimset rapax shutter not from a later date, like the 1920's?

Ron, Wollensak started using the trade name Rapax around 1946.

I hope it's not a lousy dagor (especially it is not a 'Berlin Dagor').

I assume the lens was mad between 1906 and 1908 - the shutter might be from a later date (I'm OK with that).

These are post-war...

Have and use this model in a Acme #3 shutter with proper factory aperture scale...

Great lens!!!! ;)

The prescription was recalculated from time to time, probably to take advantage of newer glasses, but claimed coverage never changed and according to Eric Beltrando (dioptrique.info) actual coverage was always less than claimed.

Use the lens within its limits and be happy.

The serial no is 222xxx which I thought dates between 1906 and 1908. Do you have another sorce?

Do you mean that the Rapax shutter will not work propery with the lens?

I think your age estimate is likely to be about right if that is what the serial number charts say, though it has never been clear to me what versions those cover. It certainly looks much older than the shutter anyway. In your picture it looks like the aluminum mounting I've seen in some old Dagors. I would assume it was remounted into the Rapax either from a barrel or an inadequate shutter. The mounting appears professional with a proper aperture scale so should be a dandy lens.

All of the 8 1/4" Dagors I've seen cover 8x10 when stopped well down. I have one mid-century one in barrel that I keep because it has just a touch more coverage, but really it will be pretty much a straight on, no movements, lens on 8x10 at about f45. Lots of coverage for smaller formats.

I've added two pics from the aluminum mounting - I hope that the modification was well/professional done...
