View Full Version : Can the Devere 507 be converted to the 5108?
Hello
I have a DeVere 5108 wall mount enlarger, which I have had mounted over a bench since I got it. I would like to be able to make larger prints with it, so I had been planning on building a custom drop table for it, but I would prefer to have an original DeVere floor standing chassis if possible. I haven't come across any DeVere 5108 chassis on their own, but there is a 507 chassis available I came across. On the images for the 507 chassis and 5108 chassis that I have seen, they look identical, so I am wondering whether it would be possible for me to unbolt the 5108 head and lens stage from the 5108 I have, and bolt them onto the mounts on this 507 chassis. I have sent a message to DeVere asking them about the possibility, but they haven't always been very prompt in their responses with me, so I thought I would ask here as well. If any of you have experience with both enlargers, it would be great if you could help out!
Thanks,
Ethan

The problem is the horizontal head and lens projection distance for all this type of hack
Start measuring
It can be done by mounting the base on a wall projection

I would think you should be able to since you have the parts. Why not call KHB in Canada to make sure.
Thanks for the replies... but the seller of the 507 decided that shipping it wouldn't be possible, so I'd have to drive over 1000 miles to pick it up, and I'm not about to do that.
I have contacted DeVere to ask if they still sell the drop table assembly for converting a wall mount to a floor standing unit. Maybe I'll be able to buy the conversion from them.

I believe the 504, 507, 5108 and 515 all share the same drop table assembly, may be easier to find another whole enlarger and do the swap. If you do manage to work something out with the conversion I am very interested in wall-mount hardware as I am looking to do the reverse conversion. If you are willing to sell me the handles etc will save me a bunch of time machining stuff.

There is also a chassis that has been on ebay for yonks:

That's one of the ones I was looking at, but apparently because it is more than 8 feet tall freight shipping isn't possible, despite what the post says

Tell him you only need the bottom half ;)

hah, yeah. I don't know if I'd trust him to disassemble it, given that he sells all manner of things and doesn't specialize in enlargers

That listing has been up for years
You don't want only the bottom, the top half is everything
They are modular, look at the pics
I have 504 in shed, no bottom, it was wall mount, I found the cast iron table base, just like the one on eBay
Converting some 5X4 enlargers can be easy t0 10X8 as the conversions were sold by Beseler 45 V-XL
I have one with DIY 8X10 made of wood by a famous photographer, wall mounted on a perch just like Tim Layton (https://www.timlaytonfineart.com/learn)

Column mounting the head, compared to a wall mount, would not change the maximum size of print. In fact, maximum print size would be smaller, because the height of the column's feet above the floor. Unless , you have the head mounted too close to the wall, so at maximum projection, it projects part of the image on the wall near the floor.

Did anyone bother to read the OP's original post? He already owns a wall mounted 5108. He wants a floor standing frame so he can drop the table to print larger. He has access to a 507 floor standing enlarger which uses the same column and frame as the 5108. He already owns the 5108 head and mounting parts. I believe he should be able to use those on the 507 frame, and I suggested he contact KHB in Canada to be sure. L

Not sure how large of print you want to make, but a friend makes 40 x 50" prints. The problem became the throat width. A head extension (longer neck?) had to be made to get it all to work.
Not sure of the model, but the comment about measuring is a good one.
As they would say in Roberts rules of order,“point of information”… What is the original negative size, and what enlarging lens are you using?

a Rodagon 300mm for 8x10" negatives. The goal is making 32x40 prints possible, and the path I'm currently looking down is to build a new Chassis, which I've posted in the DIY section

If you can get the 507 frame reasonably, that's the path I'd take since you have all the 5108 parts. No reason to re-invent the wheel. L

If that doesn't work, get a 240 lens for the 8x10's
