Thanks for this Oren. I've been waiting so I can order a quantity of 4x10 FP-4.

Has anybody placed an order in previous ULF runs through one of the distributors that operate in the eurozone that he/she can recommend? I checked the web site of a couple of them and was not impressed. I live in Germany and I’d rather avoid US and UK distributors - many of whom I know and like a lot - for I am afraid that custom duties plus S&H are gonna kill me.
Tnx!

Let's reverse your logic.

I have not read any complaints about Ilford Special order, ever.

People love to complain...where are they...

Personally I have become Anxious waiting for delivery, but never disappointed.

One year I got mine so fast it had to be in stock, CONUS.

Happy surprise.

Order locally!

Is it cheaper than just buying 8x10 and cutting it yourself in half? I’m also wondering whether order some 4x10 myself but if there’s no real advantage then I’m not sure.

About the same price but you get a box that fits and no extra dust and hassle from cutting in half.

My last order was in 2009 (from the US), and after that I did not follow the situation. The names of the distributors in the EU are completely unfamiliar to me and I have no idea what their track record is. There is no local distributor in Germany and apparently I have to order from Belgium, from a web site www.bon-image.com that yesterday and today did/does not work. Is this distributor a familiar name re: the Ilford yearly ULF run or this year is its first time?

It does not seem so bizarre to ask for someone's previous experience with some of these distributors, considering also the amount of money involved.

I wish they offered 5x8 inch. They have some unusual sizes offered.

From the Ilford website:

The options available reflect what has been asked for over the past 16 years. We are happy to consider any other size suggestions but do not guarantee to make them available.

That isn't idle rhetoric - the current list is quite a bit longer than where they started. Long ago I participated in the discussion that led to 6.5 x 8.5 being added. So although there are no guarantees, if you really want 5x8, ask them about it. As there is some setup and overhead cost for each format, best if you can make a convincing case that if Harman goes to the trouble, they actually will get orders for a reasonable number of boxes, whether from you alone or if you know of others who will join you.

I know the link does not work: that's what I wrote, i.e., that it did not work. Unfortunately it is the link in the official Ilford document re: distributor for Germany.

I used Badger Graphic when I was living in California. Great place.

Anyway, any reader out there who has bought Ilford ULF film from some European distributor in the past two or three years?

Not viewing their offerings as idle rhetoric, I think its wonderful that they do this every year and that they offer so many sizes, some seam rather rare. Someone must be ordering those sizes or I imagine they wouldn't continue to offer them. Selfishly, I wish they offered my unusual 5x8 size, I'm not thrilled with cutting down 8x10, but at least have that option.

I took your advice and reached out to both Ilford and Jeff at Badger, asking if they would consider another size. Anyone else out there interested in 5x8? I'll let you know how it goes.

I think they use a computer to lay out the best way to cut all sizes efficiently and at best value for them and us.

Every year there are cost anomalies.

I buy them.

No scrap is always a goal in any factory.

There's also the cost of bags and boxes sized to each format. There are surely minimum order quantities and volume discounts for those from Harman's suppliers, so the unit cost of these necessary auxiliaries will vary depending not just on their size but on the sales volume for each format.

HARMAN uses "cutting masks," which I interpret to mean a die cutter, for each size of sheet film. Simon Galley explained that when, 16 years ago, the annual special order adventure began. He wrote that a certain minimum number of orders would be required before a new size was offered, to cover the cost of a cutting mask and boxes.

Doesn’t look that way. Freestyle charges $150 for Hp5 8x10 and $98 for 4x10… that’s like 30% more expensive. I think I’ll keep cutting it myself…

No extra customs charges and VAT within EU

So has anyone received their film yet? Or heard anything about the status of last year’s annual order.

I received mine last week, but I’m sure it depends on how Ilford ships to the distributors.

Thanks Paul, that’s good to hear. Hopefully mine will be arriving soon. I ordered it from the View Camera Store, maybe I’ll shoot Fred an email and see what’s happening.

Good news, I received my film on Thursday. Came extremely well packaged and was shipped directly from Robert’s. I was contacted Fred at the View Camera Store to confirm that I would be home prior to shipping which was appreciated.
