View Full Version : Post yer 35mm shots!
I haven't owned a 35mm camera since 2000 or thereabouts. Recently picked one up again (Contax) and I'm enjoying the spontaneity and portability of the format.
I know there's a thread for small formats, but nothing I found was dedicated to 35mm only.
So, here are some shots I took around the neighborhood yesterday.
Show us yours!
Contax G, 28mm and red filter.

Isn't a so-called "full frame" digital camera also a 35mm camera?
At one point when I got into 120 and 4x5 I also sold all my 35mm gear, but then getting into the Nikon RF system brought me back. I've been shooting tons of 35mm lately and really like the format more and more, especially with some of the oddball stuff you can shoot like circular fisheyes.
Here's an old favorite from my Nikkor 8mm f/2.8 - the inside of a plane engine:

Each camera/lens/format is like another brush in the painters hands. Some images are impossible with large format. Here are some recent shots with my Nikonos III and 35mm Nikkor f2.5. It is not my only 35mm, I also have a Kodak Stereo for 3d slides. Sharing images from that camera on the internet is pointless.

I'm curious if this is a banded water snake near a lake or creek.
Before digital, 35mm cameras were excellent for unexpected wildlife encounters. Still are, of course. ;^)

Darting out on an errand!
She’s a Three-toed Woodpecker, working hard all day, along with her mate, hunting insects for a young (murmuring) brood inside the tree. The parents searched in 15-minute cycles, arriving back to the nest at separate times. At dusk the female disappeared into the tree for the night, instructing the male to sleep outdoors. At dawn it was back to a full day of work.
-----
I set-up a flash-mounted tripod near the tree (SB-28), metered the flash for manual, then mounted a Nikon FM3a (w/ 300mm/4.5 AIS IF-ED) on a second tripod 30 feet away, connected with a long pc cord. Shot Provia-100 at 1/250th flash sync speed, leaving her in a bit of blur. I soon removed the two tripods in case they were spooking the parents, but since my tent was nearby, I continued to watch their child-devoted labor from afar.

In my immortal youth, I managed to get this shot of exploding oil tanks at a chemical storage facility in Louisville, in 1969. I heard and felt the initial explosion from around .75 miles from our apartment. I grabbed my camera, and jumped in the car, heading for where the action was. The old Bronoco Chemical Company had a number of storage tanks, mostly partially filled just west of downtown Louisville. The origin of the fire was never determined, and the Louisville Fire Department's history gives the story several paragraphs.
I was hustled away from the scene by Louisville Police after I got only three exposures. This one was from 1/2 block away. Camera was a Petri FT, with a Vivitar 135mm f/3.5 preset lens, and Ektachrome ASA 64 film.
There is always the fear and risk of a fire at a large chemical company, especially one as large as the Ashland Chemical Company. Fear became reality on May 5, 1969. The origin of the fire is still unknown but the results were devastating. Bronoco, a subsidiary of Ashland, was located at 1315 W. Kentucky Street. The warehouse facility contained several storage tanks usually filled with several hundred thousand gallons of volatile and flammable chemicals. Consequently, the fire spread quickly and led to a chain of chemical explosions. Balls of fire spewed high into the air and an orange glow hovered over downtown Louisville.
Over one hundred firemen and numerous policemen arrived on the scene, not only to fight the fire, but also to evacuate the nearby residents. However, the firemen were at a disadvantage because they were not sure about the type of chemicals contained in the tanks.
The firemen proceeded to hook up the water hoses and spray the tanks in order to keep the blaze from spreading to the neighboring Porter Paint Plant, Superior Paper, Inc., and Distillers Grain, Inc. Since all of these companies contain highly flammable materials, the firemen had to be more cautious to prevent the fire from spreading. They would make progress only to be turned back as another tank exploded.
Over two hundred and fifty firemen and twenty-five trucks arrived before the battle was over. They persisted to conquer the fire and didn't stop until early morning. Although Bronoco was destroyed, the firemen were able to prevent the fire from spreading. It was amazing that there were no civilian casualties and only four firemen were injured, one with a sprained back and others from smoke inhalation.

It is a "Common Watersnake" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_watersnake), and appropriately named because they are quite common around here. Fortunately not dangerous in the least. This was just steps away from a beaver pond with surrounding marshy area, so it was in its home turf.
In contrast, I had just taken this photo, moments before:

Once, at San Diego Zoo, I turned a corner where a large male was pooping into his hand and hurling green shit at each newcomer.
Somehow he missed me, he was very accurate. I scampered. 1970's.
Later, same day, I learned about camel spit.
Next day I learned motorcycles are not allowed at the San Diego Wild Animal Park.
So I was up to Idyllwild and down the other side. A really nice ride.

Thank you, Greg.
Interestingly (for some), this is full-on harsh sun. I shot a roll of Rollei IR400 with a Red #29 filter.
I added a skin softening filter on a layer, and mixed in about 20% of that layer.
I'm very pleased with the result, but all the credit goes to the IR film, Photoshop, and of course, the Sun.
I was just admiring your print, I've been wanting to do some lith printing and your photo reminded me of that. Lovely shot and printed wonderfully.

Mamiya 1000DTL! Boy, what a flashback!
When I was first considering a serious camera in '68 during my sophomore HS year, I was weighing the Mamiya against the new Nikkormat FTn. Eventually, I chose the latter and got later a second one, replacing both after they were stolen in the mid '80s with wonderful Nikon FM2s. (My debate then was FM2 or Nikon F-whatever the latest was; 3? On my budget, I could get 2 of the former and couldn't really justify all the features of latter anyway.)
I attended a fancy prep school and recall the Nikons, Pentaxes, Beselers, but no one had a Leica. One fellow had an Alpa and there were a few other misc SLRs on campus.

Contax G series FYI for Ari..
Having owned and used the Contax G system for over a decade at one point (now long gone):
~The G1 is smaller and in ways easier to use than the G2. G2 is larger with more features and better functionality.
~Two best lenses in the system, 21mm Biogon, 45mm Planar. 90mm Sonnar is not recommended, the 35-70mm zoom (G2 only) is sorta ok. The 16mm Hologon is an oddity and speciality, not that useful overall, but can be extremely dramatic.
~Personal faves, two lenses to carry, 45mm Planar & 28mm Biogon. One lens 35mm Planar (needs green update sticker on G1).
Contax G system is an underrated, under appreciated modern rangefinder 35mm camera system. In real world 35mm image making conditions and realities, it is often more suited with better image making capabilities than the Leica M series.
Bernice
Agree, Bernice. Thanks.
I just sold my 21mm because I saw limited use with it, same with 28mm. I don't have much interest in the 90, but the 45 is a really amazing lens.
After one roll I was immediately blown away by it, and I'm never a "normal" lens shooter, except on 8x10.
I'll add that the G is not really a rangefinder since it doesn't use two super-imposed images to focus, it uses autofocus. The manual focus is annoying, at best.
The G is more of a fancy point-and-shoot with the best lenses in the 35mm world.
It's a love-it or hate-it camera, and I was hooked almost right away.

Most often used lens on the Contax G1 back in those days.. 45mm Planar. It Is That Good.
The autofocus/auto exposure "point -&- shoot" aspect of the G is why it became a fave. It is a camera much about decisive moment image making and not Foto mechanical tinkering. This was also the divisive element among this style of camera back when the Contax G was introduced.
Put a few thousand rolls in-out of that Contax G, never failed... ever. But those batteries...
Bernice
Agree, Bernice. Thanks.

Absolutely, making images is what it's all about, not fondling a precious piece of gear.
And yet, the Contax G lenses are all jewels in their own right, with 45mm Planar f/2 being the king.
G1 bodies are cheap enough now (silver sticker) that if one fails, it's easily replaced.

This is somewhere in Yellowstone NP, but too long ago to remember where.
It was near a vehicle turnout, so maybe someone else with sharp eyes knows.

ran a test roll of proimage 100 through an old and unloved Voigtlander VITO CSR yesterday. The color-lantham lens really did a nice job with contrast, I thought. no battery, so metered with a little clip on sekonic. The rangefinder is very cruddy and barely usable but this camera will definitely see more use.

Now you got me thinking, wonder how may Baja Bugs there are in Japan, bet you could build a real nice one with a modern Subaru motor. Seriously though I got sucked down the Nikon rabbit hole so eBay purchases from Japan keep showing up at my door. The F4 being one of the latests.

To be honest, I haven't kept up much on all that, but yes, there will be a Burning Man this year. I believe it was officially cancelled last year because of Covid, but that a lot of people went anyway. There's also "4th of Juplaya," which is sort of an unsanctioned mini-Burning Man held out at Black Rock.

Lol, this Volvo is definitely the worst car I’ve managed to find in my neighborhood. No engine, actually it’s in the owner garage, and to to avoid parking tickets the owner has to push it across the street and the back twice a month.
Hey Austin, thanks for reminding of this one. Also I have always really enjoyed your car photos.

puerto vallarta Mexico lightning storm. nikon FA nikkor 50mm 1.8 AI-s long nose velvia 50 bulb for 30 seconds hoping to catch a lighting strike. took about 6 shots and this is the only one where I got lucky. it needs a crop, but I'm lazy, sorry. seeing it happen live, I missed the heavy magenta colors, but man did the film really capture it perfectly. just in the right place at the right time
