New growth versus old? You really get incredible sharpness in your IR pictures. Mine are fuzzy wuzzy by comparison!

Perhaps. They all looked the same green to me. I dunno about the sharpness results. The 3 lenses I have for this camera are budget lenses by Leica price-point standards with the Zeiss 25mm being the sharper of three.

I've seen this as well in foliage, could it be areas of highly active photosynthesis? Rather than the older and somewhat jaded growth?
Maybe someone with the appropriate biology / physics knowledge could enlighten us as to what's going on here... :)

I remember reading online that chlorophyll levels vary within the same tree/bush/whatever. This could account for the difference in tones.
We need a photo biolgist!

Not sure except to say it could be the remains of a pulp and paper mill. There are 6 other larger, cylindrical digester tanks at the Port of Bellingham, WA, that was part of the pulp mill.

Well, I got a new lens. It was on the list of lenses that are deemed good IR lenses. So, I took a chance and bought one. Plus, I wanted a wider lens.
Tested at my favorite place. Went from f5.6 to f22. Used the 850nm filter to really stress test for hot spots. Never found a spot, even at f22!

Looking good, Jon! That was my main wide angle lens from about 1994-2021. I had to retire mine as it stopped focusing. Otherwise, I'd still be using it.

Yeah they do. They look to be design/built by the same company that did the spherical pressure vessel.

This is about a 40 minute drive west of here. It's part of the Green Lake Conference Center, https://www.glcc.org/index.html ,which is really strange. The barn is on the same (huge!) property. I'd driven by the gates before, but this was the first time we went in. People from Chicago have summer homes around the lake, and this convergence center has tons of strange things, an old hotel, houses, cabins, a 36 hole golf course, old barns, about 12 weird towers....They have summer camps for kids, conferences, and....? I think it was originally associated with the Baptists, but I'm not sure that's still true. They have a train car that was used for missionary work in the West from about 1907-1945 (ish). Now, it's a small church with pews that can hold 50 people.
The building in the picture is called "The Log Cabin Museum", but it doesn't seem in use....

A number of the images do have an IR look, but it is subtle if there.
Regardless, some incredible work of storms on his site, and other as well, and he must have traveled and worked a lot to have such a variety of landscapes. To say nothing of talent and vision!
Sandy
Yes, some excellent work. Was not seeing IR in storm photos. More in the landscapes - the LA Basin and such. He could have found the days after windstorms and rain but the clear air sure does look like IR work.
Here is another shot made with Sony a7r ll converted to IR 720. It is a totally realistic scene but a rendering you might not recognized even if you had been there. In fact, a friend who was with me in the same place was somewhat confused when he first saw the print I made, and asked me why I had printed it as a negative. And I have to agree as the subject looks confusing.

I'm not familiar with the B+W 093 filter. Do you know the nanometer equivalent of that filter?
My recent color work has been with a 680nm filter (close to LifePixel's Enhanced Color filter) on my full spectrum camera. I have a set of Zomei filters for each lens that I use. 680, 720, 760, 850, and 950nm. The cost of the set is based on the size of the filter. The most expensive was about $50.00 for 82mm. When I go out to shoot, I decide what lens and filter I want to use for the day, and put it on the camera before I leave home. That keeps things simple.

I believe it is either 820 or 830nm. I have a couple of 850nm filters and they take a couple of stops more exposure, so I figure they are pushing the M8 sensor. The 093 only takes one stop more exposure than a 720nm filter.

Okay, at 830nm you should not get any color at all. At that point, you should only get black and white IR. So, no color effects are possible. For color work you have to use the 720nm filter.

Thank you, Peter.
The middle shot was a breakthrough for me in image quality with IR. Previously I had used medium format film with IR but the long time exposure limited me to certain conditions because of the long exposures, though image quality was quite good. Then I tried small sensor digital cameras converted to IR, but image quality was not great and did not work with many subjects. Finally I had a Nikon FF D-800 camera converted to IR and the shot of the pens and oak tress was one of the first shots I made with that cameras, with a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens.

If one is getting a Digital for IR work and planning on B&W final images only does it make more sense to get a 720 or 830 conversion? Or a lower one and then process using a program like Silver Efex Pro to get even more control of the dark sky effect? That program doesn't do anything with color filters to a monochrome only image - and some IR images I have seen would benefit from a bit more contrast/dark skies. Is it doable with this type of software, more so than the more powerful IR conversion?
Peter De Smidt
1-Sep-2022, 18:19
Personally, I'm a fan of 720nm. If you get a 720 conversion, you can always put a higher nanometer filter on the lens, if needed. But it really is a matter of taste. My camera is full spectrum, which means I always have to use a filter on the camera.

The other day, I was out photographing with my camera on a strap. I like this one: https://luma-labs.com/pages/qd-loop-3-5 Hudson Henry has a discount code for 10% off. Note: for this strap your L-bracket or plate has to have a QD socket. My Kirk L-bracket does. Anyway, my 82mm filter fell off while I was walking around. Luckily it wasn't a very expensive one. So I needed a replacement. I've settled on an 82mm Kase Wolverine Magnetic filter. You thread a magnetic adapter on the front of the lens, and now filters and lens caps magnetically snap right on. I don't like threading big filters on and off in the field. My camera is full spectrum, and so I need to swap out IR and IR/UV blocking filters when I change from IR to color photos. Luckily, Kase makes a 720nm filter, and Haida makes the IR/UV block. I wish the filters were 95mm, but those aren't available in magnetic filters that I know of. Anyway, I'll report back after I use the filters in the field.
Note on full spectrum camera: the colors aren't completely normal, and you get color shifts on the edges with really wide lenses. The later are fairly easy to fix with gradient local adjustments in raw processing. Since I'm not really a color photographer, that's ok with me, but it's good to know about.

Thanks for finding the Haida filters for the UV/IR cut filter. The prices are very reasonable. But, it may be an indication of the quality, and a reason of the color shift on the edges. LifePixel charges $130.00 for a 77mm version of this filter. Haida charges $70.00. From the feedback on the LifePixel site, there are no complaints about this problem.
From their specs:
When combined with a wide-angle lens, lower-frequency wavelengths of visible light associated with yellow, orange, and red colors passing through the filter and along that lens type's curved edges can be impeded in a significantly greater degree than higher-frequency wavelengths of visible light associated with blue and violet colors. This can result in an unwanted green cast within an image taken with a Haida NanoPro MC UV/IR Cut Filter and a wide-angle lens. To avoid such color shifts using this filter, it is recommended not to be used with lenses that are intended to provide an angle of view greater than 60°.
Peter De Smidt
16-Sep-2022, 07:15
Jon, It's possible that the filter is the problem. On the other hand, it wouldn't surprise me at all if Haida made filters for other brands., such as Kolari and Lifepixel. I seem to remember Kolari telling me that there would be color shifts with lenses wider than about 24mm, but I can't seem to find that source.

From Slavery To Freedom
The Slavery to Freedom Tour is a 45-minute presentation centered on four original slave cabins and the families who lived there. The cabins, which were built in the 1850s, were continuously inhabited until the late 20th century. Each cabin has been preserved and restored to reflect a different era significant to both African-American history and the history of Magnolia.
So, they tell the story. Worts and all.

Did a Google search on the Mill... It was constructed by Ralph Hiers in 1976. He built it to look much older... :-(

Nope, most of the IR is B&W. I think they prefer it that way! I do mine both color and B&W. Depends on the subject, and what I feel like doing. Sometimes, I do both, and then find out I prefer one over the other! Glad you like my recent attempts.
Looks like you are in or near Arizona? I have family there. Although, it has been many years since I've been out that way.

Have not shared any IR work in a long time. In my region the magnolias started blooming a few days ago.
