Will I Get Vignetting: Toyo 810G - 1200mm Bellows - Xenar 480mm f/4.5

Greetings everyone,

I'm looking to get parts to build a Toyo 810G from a seller in Japan (I believe).

Does anyone know if I will get vignetting with 1200mm bellows behind a Sneider Kruzenack Xenar 480mm f/4.5?

The bellows will be from Ecbuyonline.
Edit* I just found their Ebay message, they said the front opening is 154x154mm and the rear is 278x278mm.

The seller says I could use a 5x7 standard as an intermediary, but I'm confused as how this will help.

I mean if the front standard and bellows from the 5x7 standard to the front standard are similar dimensions to a normal setup then I don't see how this will work. I'm probably just ignorant to how these things work.


Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

I have an 810M with a Western Bellows made to the same dimensions as the original Toyo. I use the 450M Nikkor with no probems. The same bellows fits 810G, which I have also used with the same bellows and full functionality. When I need to focus on close subject matter, I use a B+W +0.5 supplementary lens (close-up filter) instead of pulling a lot of bellows. It sounds like you want to make frame-filling portraits with that big Xenar, which would be nice. However, I don't think the 810G is up to the task. The front standard is the same as used on the 45G and even the 23G and is not intended for such a heavy lens.

ECbuyonline makes a good product, but the material is much thicker than the original Toyo, and some custom work is required to fit them on the Toyo frames. I have rebuilt a number of Toyo views and for my personal cameras I now only install Dynatect.

So, my xenar seems to fit on my 810M but I was thinking of using an additional front standard and modifying it to act as a lens support device.

How heavy is the Xenar lens? I have been using a 14" (355mm) Wollensak Veritar on a Toyo MII, 810G, and Robos with no problem. The Veritar is a "front loader" which means that both elements and shutter (#5 Alphas) sits in front of the lens board and weighs ~ 3lbs. If your Toyo is having trouble with a heavy lens have a technician check the locking mechanism - it probably needs tightening.

It is pretty heavy, but then again I'm very weak :P

I just hope we get a collective consensus I don't need an intermediary standard because the 1200mm will not cause vignetting.
I still don't understand how an intermediary standard would help, I'm a visual learner I guess.

If the bellows sags at long extensions, that could block the light path. Just tuck the dark cloth or something else under the bellows at its midpoint to prevent the sagging. Other than that, the lens has plenty of coverage, even with generous movements.

Most lenses will fit, and they'll work just fine without extra support.
