I've just got my 4x10 back for my Chamonix 45H-1.
And lens wise I've got a G-Claron 210 that works well. If I understand it it's the equivalent of a 35mm widen angle in the 135 format. (not so easy to compare given the different ratios but more or less anyway)

A bit wider would be nice too, say 150-165mm.

But then comes a interesting problem.
Lenses I found so far in that range that covers 4x10 (270mm) is hard to find, huge, heavy and expensive ($1000+).
For example the 150mm f5.6 Schneider Super Symmar XL, 155 f6.8 Rodenstock Grandagon N or 65 f8 Schneider Super Angulon

I could go even wider, but then it's more of a special event lens, and not as useful day to day.
The funny thing is that there actually is more lenses available in the 110 to 125mm range to reasonable prices like the 120mm f8 Nikkor SW and 125 f8 Fujinon SW

So if anyone has any suggestion of other lenes in the 150mm-165mm range that perhaps is smaller and lighter or less expensive or more readily available I would be more than happy.

There's the Wollensak 6 1/4" f/12.5 which covers 8x10.
A little longer, but the Fujinon-W 180 with inside lettering just covers 8x10.
Consider the Schneider Angulon 165mm as well.

It's a matter of personal taste, but 210 feels a lot tighter than "35mm" to me on 4x10 because the vertical coverage corresponds to more like 53mm-equivalent.

Anyway, I use a 150 Computar, stopped way down, on whole plate, which has a diagonal close to that of 4x10. A bit hard to find, though.

EDIT: picking up on Ari's post, most if not all modern 180mm plasmats should at least just cover.

ANOTHER EDIT: Thinking about oldies, perhaps the 6.5x8.5 Series V Protar, which IIRC has a focal length of around 140mm.

I’ve been using the Angulon 165 as my wide lens on 4x10 and highly recommend it. Occasionally,I have used a SSXL 110, but don’t usually carry it.

For mine, I use a Fujinon 180 (with inside lettering) and a 120 Nikkor for my wider options on my 4x10. I cant afford anything in the 150-165 range that I have found.

It's actually interesting question. The image circle for 4x10 is about 275mm. So any lens that comes close to covering 8x10 (312mm image circle) will cover. However most lens manufacturers usually don't make "close to 8x10 coverage" lenses. Keith mentioned one, the Schneider 110mm Super-Symmar XL. The Rodenstock 115mm Grandon N, the Schneider 120mm Super Angulon and the Fujinon SW 125mm are some others. Of course those are all shorter than you were asking about. I can't think of a lens in the 150mm - 165mm range that would cover 4x10 and not 8x10, which doesn't mean there aren't some out there. Another slightly longer lens would be a Rodenstock 180mm Apo Sironar S.

So I think the simple answer is to find lenses in the 150mm - 165mm range that cover 8x10.

The image circle for 4x10 is about 275mm.

More like 265 mm if you allow for the border, with some variation for different brands of holder. That's enough to make a difference as many of the lenses mentioned are right on the edge of that. Also matters if one is shooting everything at infinity or is working closer, which gains some image circle.

6 1/2" f8 Goerz WA Dagor. Uncommon, but not impossible to find. Many are single coated. There is also the Carl Zeiss Jena Goerz-Dagor 15cm f/9 lens, but these are rare and not coated.

150 mm f9 Graphic Kowa (similar to computar) will cover 4x10 but not 8x10, is sharp, light and if in a shutter expensive. If you are lucky enough to find one like I did that was in a graphic arts camera it will be much less money and should screw into a #1 shutter without fanfare.

What I use covers 11 x 14. Mine’s not even coated. Never felt it made a difference.

Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions!

The Angulon 165mm; I have two copies of the 90mm version for 4x5, and I'm not totally convinced about the corner sharpness. Still it's very small and light and perhaps possible to get hold of. There is one on the big auction sit just now for $600.
The Kowa 150mm f9 also looks interesting. There is one on sale for $785 in a #1 shutter.
The Wollensak options feels like a jungle. I have to dive in for a bit, before I can surface.

Still, it have to wait for a month or two. I just went for the even wider options and ordered a Fujinon SW 125mm for $370.

The Wollensak jungle isn’t so bad if you have a guide. There are two common* Wollensak 6.25” (159mm) wide angle lenses that cover 8x10: a f/9.5 and a f/12.5.

The f/9.5 is an 8/4 design available either uncoated (engraved “Velostigmat Series III”) or coated (engraved “Raptar” or “Anastigmat”).

The uncoated version of the f/12.5 lens is a 4/2 design engraved “Series IIIa EX. W.A.” The coated version is a 4/4 design engraved “Extreme W.A.”

All will cover the format, none will break the bank. The choice depends on availability and whether you prioritize coating and/or a comparatively modern shutter: the coated versions are in Alphax and Rapax shutters.

To my disappointment, my Graphic Kowa 150mm would not cover 4x10, though I tried all manner of lens spacing variations.

*For the sake of completeness I’ll add that Wollensak did briefly make a third 6.25” wide angle lens that covers 8x10, a f/6.8 4/4 lens with optional coating offered only from 1946-1947. This version is rarely encountered, but there you have it.

Thanks for the info. I might try one of those eventually, if I can find a good copy and shutter. And as long as they are at least single coated I'm OK,

I use that Fujinon 125 you mentioned with an 8x10 back. I got mine for about $400 a few years ago and they are pretty common. This is a modern design, multicoated lens, so it is a good choice if you want sharp detailed negatives for enlargement, and don't need movements.
About 12 years ago I was choosing between the 125 Fujinon and the 150 Nikkor. The field of view of both is about the same (after I crop the corners a little on the Fuji 125 negatives). I correct for converging horizontal or vertical lines in the enlarger, so the Fujinon has served me well all these years.
