Please share your islands and tell your story. :D

Maybe it’s floating in the ocean, or formed by a braided river. Maybe it’s a quiet hammock in a tidal marsh, or a rocky sea stack smacked by sea waves. Sandbars and transitory islands count! I imagine skies are often important, reflections too.

These craggy islands are just off the beach in Washington state.

Seems that islands are a rare commodity around here. ;^)

To be sure, below is one of the few remaining islands I have in my 4x5 portfolio...

Technically, it’s a sea stack in morning light with an ebbing tide (Washington state). In an hour’s time, it will be surrounded by sand, not water. To preserve texture in the foreground, I used a 2-stop GND filter, causing deep forest values on the right. Ahoy, any more islands out there?

Thanks Monty, come on out to Washington state and shoot some sea stacks – always photogenic. I have a trip planned to Olympic NP next month and hope to capture a few more…

Your pyramid is surreal, out of a dream. What shutter speed did you choose? Any filter? BTW, this would be a perfect prop for your nymph from the Redwoods, if you can coax her out of the forest to the beach. I can see her standing on top for scale. ;^)

I’m searching my portfolio for another island, so few and far between...

I would never have suspected this, but it is now clear that Islands are the least photographed land form among LFers. :D

Here’s another rare island from my portfolio. Sure would like to visit those sea stacks in a kayak, maybe even stay a night. The foreground logs were once rain forest trees, swept down rivers on the Olympic Peninsula into the ocean, then tossed here by storms.

Tis a bit quiet...even I forgot I posted an image here! I found the data for the photo above. I have photographed the rock(s) many times, but this time I used the 19" RD Artar (no filter) at f90. The total exposure was about 30 seconds and was a series of long exposures of which I did not record the number or duration of each. My notes are relatively sparse for this image. I assume the 19" because it and the 24" are my only lenses that go to f90. Taken mid-December 1995.

There is a sea gull for scale...

Here are a couple more I have shown on the forum before...

A double 5x7 platinum/palladium print (Chile, 2018)
Computar 210/6.3 w/ Red Filter, FP4+, f/16@1/8 sec
From above our camp.

A 16x20 silver gelatin print from a 4x5 neg. (So.Oregon, 1990)
Caltar IIN 150/5.6, no filter, TMax100, f64@ 8 seconds
Early morning, minus tide. Unfortunately the fine detail in the light area in the center of the image is not shown here. Some nice circling of the foam is happening.

I think I see the gull, halfway down on the right. And I think that’s your Greek Goddess after all. You know how they can transform into all kinds of animals. She must have flown in from your Redwood forest. Without the gull, I would have thought the rock island was smaller.

Nice, I like the foamy texture and circling motion – at first I thought those were ice fragments on a winter’s day.
