I previously had a 135mm Rodenstock APO Sironar S @208mm diameter circle coverage that easily covered 5x7, proved by my many pictures. Will the 135mm Rodenstock APO Sironar N or the 135mm Nikkor W both @200mm diameter circle coverage also work with 5x7?

Best wishes --- Allen Anway

Nikon has the image circle at f/22 at 200 mm. So no, or just barely depending on focus. L

The Nikkor data says... no.

Image circle at f5.6 = 165mm

Image circle at f22 = 200mm

Even the 135mm Rodenstock APO Sironar S with an image circle of 208mm is iffy for 5x7.
The test would be to examine the film (color transparency) image edges with a good microscope. Other methods will not be as revealing of how the specific lens performs at or near the limits of it's image circle.

IMO, the 125mm f8 Fujinon SW would be a better choice near this focal length for 5x7.. except it is not a small or compact lens.

The numbers say it fits. I've never tried. My lenses for 5x7 in this range are SSXL 110mm and APO Sironar W 150mm. The 135mm Fuji is a great lens on 4x5, but for my tastes, too tight on 5x7. Of course you could crop if the corners get clipped or fall off. Tightest lens I use on 5x7 is a 72mm with 226 mm image circle.

Typical image circle needed for 5x7 would be 210mm, 208mm ~just~ makes it by under 2mm.
Why not crop the 125mm f8 Fujinon SW to achieve the 135mm focal length effect?

The original Fujinon W 135, with the inside lettering, covers 228mm. All of the Fuji lenses of the period are outstanding and cover more than any other similar line--I have even heard them being criticized for being too sharp. When I set up my 4x5 kit I bought those thinking I might try 5x7 some day, and am glad I did. The 150mm is especially fine and a comfy length for 5x7, and the 210 covers 8x10!
