This fellow’s web stretched across a FS road near Mount Saint Helens (Wash. State). It was just high enough for my Honda Civic to pass under. Down the road I pitched my tent, then walked back with my macro lens. I captured the arachnid from both sides. Later that night, let’s just say my dreams were troubled. (If anyone can name the species, they’ll earn my eternal gratitude.)

Maybe there are enough people here to give life to a small-format macro thread. What flora and fauna did you capture? What equipment made it possible? The magnification?

Often macro photography is a painful, knee-breaking, back-aching, strenuous business, so usually there’s a good story behind each shot. Please share yours. :D

Probably in the genus Argiope. Hard to tell if it's a male (would have bulbs or "clubs" at the tips of the front pair of palps) or female (fairly straight palps). Argiope are large with bright coloration & build large webs. Argiope aurantia is very common here in the Northeast.--alfredian

Its size, bright-yellow underside, and ability to string a web across the road helps confirm your genus identification.

It occurs to me the letter “A” on its back confirms “Argiope” too. ;^)

Perhaps this thread can turn us into better naturalists.

Good Lord, whatever that is, I don’t feel like there’s a happy story on the way. A jungle indeed.

Meanwhile, here’s a bee on a Rock Rose that’s so drunk on pollen, he didn’t mind my close working distance:

You might notice he has a tiny friend down there. I didn’t notice him at the time. Looks like an orange beetle with black polka dots. They seemed to be shaking more pollen onto the petals than they were collecting. A bit of drunken revelry.

The trouble with some of these thread titles not specifying smaller format arises for those of us who navigate by clicking on new posts. That just shows the thread title, not which forum it’s in. If we’re going to continue to separate separate out smaller format images, I think it would be clearer if it were specified in the thread title.

Clicking on "new posts" does show each thread's forum location (look on the right).

But I can see how one may get lost if they don't look.

I'll see if a moderator can add "small format" to the title.

Excuse me, but I do not look in the sections of the forum, but have everything displayed in the "unified view".

So, I'll give you the following task, because that's what brought me to the large format: take pictures with your analog 35mm SLR and bellows, extensions, macro lenses. And on color slide film. But please measure the exposure with an incident light meter like the Sekonic L398. Or with an external spot meter. Zackzack, nix TTL ...

Here are a few smaller paper negatives, only in 9x12. Multigrade RC, about ISO 3. Paper negatives give you an immediate idea of whether you are right or wrong. This is really a big advantage of large format photography.

I shot my Dead Bug very quickly this morning on iPad 5 mit zoom on tripod with 10 shot automatic stacking

all editing done in camera, the black border added in PS

Nobody has done a 'real' print exchange since my last 2, years ago

I shoot up to 11X14 with TMax 400, Tri X 320 and Extascan, all too big for my scanner

This is wood from a White Bark Pine high in the mountains, fallen after an attack of the mountain pine beetle. This is a full-frame scan, so you can imagine how little this flame-like patch of wood actually is.

Got kids? If you sit at the computer for four hours, your children will get depressed. If you spend four hours with them in the darkroom, they are happy. Another reason why I am doing large format photography. Already got a Graflex and a Brand 17 for next Christmas, 150 sheets of Rollei Ortho 25 and 100 sheets of Fomapan 100 ...

Reminds me of this LF shot's background, pulled from the “Leaf” thread, to compare with SLR lenses and smaller formats when it comes to macro compositions. Like yours, it's approaching 1:1.

I hope you can see the spider thread suspending the leaf?

I used a Schneider 150mm/9 g-claron with considerable bellows draw for a Tachi macro application. Despite the magnification, I still slightly cropped this shot since the leaf stayed small in relationship to the film. I think the aperture was fairly open (f/11) for the 1/30th (!) shutter speed. (Who keeps saying to stop this lens way down?) And I was very lucky with DOF. If I had closed down and used flash, I'm sure the soft background would have gone black, rendering a different aesthetic appeal.

I remember waiting for the wind to still. And waiting… And waiting…

LF macro out of focus blur is different than what is achieved in smaller formats. The out of focus image quality remains affected by the aperture shape even at f16-f22 which is why older barrel lenses with mostly round iris remains preferred.

Have this same image made using 13x18cm Agfa Chrome RS100. The colors are different. At some point, should dig it out, scan it to post for to allow a comparison. Thinking of this, should do some more digging of old images to share..

These web images do not come close to presenting the amount of detail contained at the plane of focus.. What does come up with images like this, how much of the image to hold in sort of focus -vs- out of focus blur and it's rendition.

I find spiders strange and fascinating, though I've not yet succeeded in making my wife a fan. Pretty soon it will be warm enough for them to start working again outside in my garden. Leucauges venusta http://www.marylandinsects.com/images/Orchard_Spider_1.jpg is an especially attractive, if small, orb-builder. They have a very sporty chartreuse/black/white/silver coloration, and have the odd habit of often setting their webs at a 45 deg angle to the vertical. There seem to be dozens in late spring, and then one day they're all gone.

Your orchard spider is a beautiful insect, whoops, I mean arachnid.

Nicely balanced in the frame, too.

So attractive, if it allowed me, I'd be tempted to hold it in my palm for a close look, without a flinch!

Macro shooters often try refrigerating insects to better control them as subjects. It never works well. I just want to discourage anyone who’s tempted by the idea. It’s not only a mean thing to do, but not aesthetically pleasing.

“A good naturalist can spot close-up pictures of refrigerated subjects every time,” says John Shaw in his classic book Closeups in Nature. “Imagine refrigerating your kids until they could not move and then photographing them – surely you could tell that they didn’t look right in the resulting photo.”

Here’s an autumn leaf (Big Leaf Maple) rescued from the sidewalk and brought home for a carefully controlled tripod shot, 35mm and LF. About 1:1.5 and a full-frame scan. It’s a natural light shot from a nearby curtained window. I think the tiny, non-planar segments helped create the specular highlights. A polarizer may have rendered a very different look and feel.

A very beautiful picture. It inspires. It also makes me think a bit of Scorcese and Visconti films ("The Age of Innocence", "Il Gattopardo"). There, the - mostly colored - shadows also remain very dark, but not black, which gives them potential to become even darker, absolutely black, or lighter. And the highlights fade into bright white, but only in a few places, so the actual lights are mostly darker than white. Which points to the light source. A really very bright but diffuse light that envelops the objects in the shadows, despite the prevailing darkness. Probably with 4x5 and macro you just come to the solution of using a flash at some point.

Fuji 8x10 HR-U X-Ray cut down to 4x5, Graphmatic Holder, 4x5 Sinar Norma 180mm f5.6 chrome Durst Componon lens, full key sun. This was exposure #6, two stops over ambient reading of grey card EI 50 TTL Sinarsix 1/15 @ Fll. Short development is stock Legacy Mic-X 5 minutes 68F. Cesco flat bottomed 8x10 tray, sheets developed singly. I did a sort of ring-around, varying exposure and development times. This is the lowest contrast version which I like. 8x10 Arista RC #2 Multigrade dev Omega DII with Omegalite circuline head

Here's an obligatory shot of a cicada/17-year locust (Magicicada septendecim) that I took in the middle of last month. They've since "died-off" for another 17 years. This is the first time I've really been able to photograph them, as I didn't have a proper macro lens 17 years ago.

Taken with expired Provia 400X film (35mm)
