Tuco, this is a wonderful double portrait.
I’m reminded of that famous Bob Dylan lyric from “Like a Rolling Stone”:
You used to ride on the chrome horse with your diplomat
Who carried on his shoulder a siamese cat.
I’m curious if this is a Puget Sound beach. Perhaps the Olympic Peninsula?

The name of the cat is/was Sam. Technically it was my girlfriend's kitty, but I took care of him too. Not exactly the brightest cat, but quite lovable and usually found a way to my lap. I could be anthropomorphizing a bit here, but he seem to be saying you can't see me. (1981)

Thanks for that. That was like previous life....living in Oceano, CA. Well, there was little more to this. On couple of occasions I found Sam sitting quite smug on this fence, since it provided barriers from both sides (essentially hiding)...cats like doing this, as you know - I got his number pretty quickly.

I dog sat a very smart German Shepherd. He could open any door in that house
He was parked daytime in 8' tall cyclone fence
Neighbors were complaining he was loose, but whenever I was there he was inside the fence
Finally we found he would climb out and back in quickly
One day the house was surrounded by police, they were hunting a murderer. We were having a BBQ, the dog was everywhere. Police moved down the block
I went into the open garage with the German Shepherd off leash, he sniffed around and came out
THEN I went in to find the 'murderer' crouching in the back
I softly told the guy, I am going that way, you go the other. He did, I did, the dog wanted BBQ
Police got the guy 3 houses down
Hailey at the lake. Not a good fishing companion, she was more attracted to the lure than were the trout. bk216737

AJ, thanks. My wife says he looks like a German pop star, circa 1983. The wispy hair strands, I guess.
Muki is a northern dog, he was born in Iqaluit, somehow survived, and came to the southland at 3 months old. He was called Niko then, but we liked Muki better.

Peter, Ari, Of course it helps that I like dogs, but what I want to articulate is something about your portraits. When we talk about portraits of people, there is usually a debate whether the portrait can actually show something about the character of the person, or whether it is merely a picture. I tend towards the view that a portrait in itself cannot capture character, what it can do is meet our pre-conception of the individual (the famous portrait of Churchill comes to mind). What stood out in your pet portraits was that I really wanted to meet the dogs (although as Peter commented, at least one his dogs didn't particularly want to meet me ...) so your images definitely captured something about the subjects. A portrait that evokes an emotional response from the viewer is special.

Peter, that's very kind of you to say. Lily would be happy to meet you if we were out on a walk, and there weren't any dogs besides Cotton around, police cars, or other shenanigans. She also would be fine if I was around to tell her it was ok for you to come into the yard.

Here's my cuties... We have adopted them 2 months ago. My wife is a nurse and the doctor she's working with found these cuties on the street but couldn't take care of them because of his busy schedule so one morning my wife came back with these 3 babies. We are far away from them for a month because of our trip to Portugal to find a property in Alicante (https://immocostablanca.net/alicante/) and we had to leave them with my mother but I'm missing them so much.

This B&H Event Space video from July may interest people who photograph their dogs. The presenter is a gentleman named Michael Brian, who specialises in images of dogs, and dogs and people. I didn't know that such specialists exist, but there's probably no shortage of businesses, and some individuals, that want this kind of imagery. Brian appears to work at the high end. I found the video interesting enough that I lasted the whole 1H18M. He clearly has a lot of experience and put a good deal of effort into this presentation. He shows, and discusses, a lot of his work. Some may regard Brian's views about dogs as creatures as a bit eccentric.
The video isn't on YouTube. It's on B&H's Event Space site. The substance starts at 01:25: Empowering Dog Photography with Michael Brian (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/find/eventDetails.jsp/id/3872)
He also has a website, Michael Brian Photography (https://www.michaelbrianphoto.com)

Wafer soft box?
Bernice Loui
15-Feb-2022, 11:39
Yes, this is a Plume Wafer Express, smallest in the set (used for small stuff). Been using Plume wafer SB since the 1990's. These produced better results than Broncolor SB from that era. Since then piles of SB today have inner diffusers. One of the features that makes Plume SB different, they use a plastic light blue mesh diffuser sheet that IMO does a better job diffusing the flash tube light source more uniform across SB front and the slight blue does a bit of color correcting for the SB fabrics used.
Plume made a hexoval SB back in the days before that SB shape was popular. Got one back then as it produced roundish shape catch lights in eyes instead of the rectangular shaped SB so common back then.

A noble hound, Valdotas, and a good photograph.
A friend's dog whom I get to take care of Nov 20th to Dec 2nd. This photo was from a January 2023 stay. An incredible dog...when we hang out at the bar next door and everyone wants to take him home. Not so fun the time he bolted out the backdoor and immediately bolted back in, freshly sprayed by a skunk. So it goes.
Indie and Stick along the Baduwa't (Mad River) -- a once or twice a day walk.
