View Full Version : Post Your Smaller Format Trees!

Just about to post this one on the LF "Post Your Trees!" thread, but felt guilty about this MF image, so am starting another one here for smaller formats. At any rate, I'll start with mine...from our latest trip to Monhegan Island last August. After having spent a week of crystal clear days (aarrgghh!), the fog finally rolled in about an hour before we had to hop on the return boat. So I skipped breakfast, picked up my camera and sprinted over the top of the island to the eastern side. At any rate, here's one of a few I managed before the sun broke through (and I had to catch the boat!):

I find panos with a digital camera to be a modern equivalent to my LF work, in the sense that it takes planning and the following of a "process", not just snapping away.

Very nice. A bit jealous because I like that subject matter and place too, and have spent some time hurrying around out there but it didn't lead to great photos. I think some physical exertion leads to great photos because it gets the brain in gear.

Thanks JP...just the way I feel (a bit jealous) when viewing your ethereal tree branches - great use of those vintage lenses!

My wife and myself have been going to Monhegan for years...but I can never seem to hit it right for fog. One trip...again - after a week of clear blue skies, we were just departing on the boat when...in rolls an amazing fog bank - which had apparently settled in for days, but too many commitments prevented my timely return. Grrrr!

(oh...and there appears to be a darker area on the upper left of this print as posted - not present on the actual print)

I’d like to see Monhegan Island in person one day. George Tice did some awesome work there.

Igor (and all others),

I really enjoy the look of those, and of the images on your web page. I assume that the grainy look is due to enlarging 35 mm, but the "sparkly" effect, for lack of a better word, is due to the meniscus lens? What sort of lens could a person use on 4x5 to get such a look? I know nothing about antique lenses.

Thanks

Hi and thanks for your comments.
As for meniscus - it is the simplest lens you can make. Well, pinhole is even simpler , but pinhole has no glass.
Once you get adequate convex / concave lens you can use it with any format. I built mine 20 years ago from old Meyer 50mm lens
( leaving only front element ) and use it almost exclusively with 35mm film. I did try one for medium format, but did not like it.
There is a lot of information about it, just google for Meniscus Lens Photography.
Best wishes,
Igor

On 4x5, if you have a speed graphic or shutter otherwise, a reinhold wollaston meniscus or verito would be good. If you need something in a shutter, look for a imagon but don't use the strainer as that imparts the silhouette of the strainer to the highlight sparkles. Many other lenses will work if you remove some portion of the lens.

Having some fun here!

The full tree is from two 4x5 negatives, and was the fourth time I had photographed the tree. The first time was taking 3 images with a Rollieflex. I had a friend with me, so after the series of three images, I made my way down to the base of the tree, climbed up the bark of the trunk 15 feet or so, and had my friend click the shutter. Probably around 1978, give or take a yer.

Still would like to try the whole tree image with two 4x10, or even 5.5x14, negatives. I should get my son the rock-climber to go out with me...if not to climb, to help me get the camera stuff up the trail!

Ferrania Orto 50 film, 35mm. I exposed the roll at 25ASA and bracketed. Camera: Kodak Retina Reflex III with the 50mmm Schneider Xenon f1.9 lens.
Film developed in Thornton 2-Bath developer, 4.5 minutes in each bath. I chose this since Thornton was one of the developers recommended by Ferrania themselves, and knowing how contrasty these slow ortho films tend to be, I wanted to tame the contrast right out of the gate. Excellent tonal separation.

Thanks, Paul ! Yours is beautiful as usual ...
Always wanted to try two bath developers, Thorton or Diafine, but chemicals are so expensive here in Europe.
So I stay with HC110 and Rodinal.
Best wishes,

Thank you! This grand oak tree has such a presence amongst what is left of its forest. I spent an amount of time trying to capture it.
I could see that tree from the road, but could not get a good viewpoint to photograph. I wrote the property owner and got permission to walk in. There is a row of houses behind that tree from that viewpoint, but a foggy New Year's Day allowed it to stand alone.

Pieter is that a recent photo...perhaps from the area around Ubehebe crater? I'm just wondering if the bottom of that crater has (or had) become a lake due to the recent heavy rains in DV. Or perhaps the rains didn't reach that far north? Or maybe ground there is too porous to hold much water for long?
