I have a pair of safety goggles, the kind that cover my glasses and have a strap that goes around my head.

The goggles have developed an oily film on the surface and have began to turn yellow. They are about 30 years old.

The yellow color is not a problem for me it's the oily film that is the issue.

What is the recommended way of removing the oily film?

I was thinking of soaking them in Dawn dishwashing detergent but not sure if that will completely ruin them.

Yes, I know I should just order a new pair of goggles but I try to conserve my finances any way I can and if I don't need to spend the money well?

You'll probably spend more on cleaner than a new pair of goggles! They don't cost much these days. But yeah, try some dilute dish soap first.

Twenty bucks apiece? My wholesale price on ones like that was about a dollar apiece.

That oily film means the vinyl plastic is rotting and leaching out the plasticizer , as others have said toss 'em and get a new pair

I seriously hope they are polycarbonate and not vinyl. Safety equipment has a lifetime, 30 years is way over it. Even at $20 this is very cheap compared to eye surgery or even a new pair of glasses.

Vinyl went out of use for this kind of thing long ago, except for perhaps colored trim on overpriced "sporty" designs, or flexible tight-fitting side pieces on chem goggles. The viewing surface will be either acrylic or polycarb.

Best to replace them.
Otherwise it's like trying to add flavor to used chewing gum...or going bungee-jumping with a bungee repaired with rubber bands.

Looks like the committee has spoken, new googles it is!

Now to dispose of the old googles in an eco friendly way. Ideas?
