V700 w/14mm scan hight/Epson guru question

In a moment of desperation to scan my work I bought a Epson V700 advertised as functioning fine but with the focus being way out, as in14mm above the bed. Stock height in around 3mm.

I'm wondering if the underlying reason for this jumps out at anyone? I'll know more when the scanner gets here but I'm starting to think my cheapness is going to get the best of me here.

Was it shipped without the head locked? If you can find a way to space it that far out and it looks acceptable maybe use it as-is. Otherwise if you have nothing to lose maybe disassemble and see if anything around the head unit looks loose or jumps out at you.

It hasn't made it here yet. Seller's comments:

"Hey yeah so basically if you can find a new sled unit, the actual optic piece, then you’ll be able to have it at 100%. It’s currently set by 8mm which is to say the scanned object needs to be 8mm above the glass."

Can you just return the V700? If bought on eBay you have the upper hand.
