I came across a lens and I’m having trouble finding any info about it. It’s a Goerz Celor f 5.5 US Pat # 635472 Series 1b no. 7.

The brass barrel it’s in incorrectly marked showing wide open as f/2. I’m curious if anyone knows it’s coverage and approximate value.

Thanks for any help!

Celors are listed in the 1913 and 1915 Goerz American Optical Company catalogs on the cameraeccentric.com site. It's a double-anastigmat claimed to cover 10x12 wide open or 12x15 at f/16. The list price in barrel was $163 in 1913, but I have no idea what it's worth in today's market nor could I say if I did.

Sorry - I didn't see Steve's post.

See page 19 of the 1911 Goerz catalog here: http://www.piercevaubel.com/cam/catalogs/1911goerzlp639.htm for description.

Goerz promoted the Celor as a fast portrait lens, compared to their slower Dagor with greater coverage, which they promoted as a general purpose lens.

According to this table, the 14 inch Celor you show has coverage between 10x12 and 11x14 inches, depending on aperture. This would make it suitable for use with 8x10 film.

I read somewhere that Fujinon C lenses are based on a modified Celor design. While C ostensibly stands for Compact, it may also stand for Celor.

ALSO: the aperture markings are probably either "US" stops. Are they "2, 4, 8, 16, 32" etc? If so, it's the "Universal System" where US-16 = f/16, and all others are one stop apart, with US 8 being f/11 and US 32 being f/22.
The Celor, and Dogmar are fully airspaced, 4/4 lenses.

So if you follow that down, US 2 is f/5.5. Besides Dagors, I have a Syntor and several Dogmars. My 420mm f/5.5 Dogmar (like the others) is convertible. In this case 420/588/672.
